California Excelsior graduate after 2003, pls help!

Published

Hello,

I am a current Excelsior College student (all exams and FCCA completed) preparing for CPNE. My problem is that due to my husband's job, our family has relocated to California which no longer accepts EC graduates due to lack of clinical hours provided by EC. I do hold a current CA LVN license.

Are there any EC graduates after 2003 that live in CA that was able to become an RN in CA? If so, what did you do to get around this situation?

I am so close to finishing my RN education and this is a great opportunity for my husband, but I don't want to remain an LVN/LPN, so does anyone have any ideas to get around this (other than leaving my husband, because I still like having him around :))

Thanks

Thank you for your response.

(Just to be clear, it's not just the VA system -- for any federal nursing position, including in military facilities and any other kind of federal facility or position, it doesn't matter where the actual facilty is located, as long as you are licensed in some US state, you can work there. The federal facilities aren't licensed by the states, and therefore aren't bound by the nursing licensure rules of the state(s) in which they are located.)

Thank you Elkpark. This helps to know for my possible move back to Cali. Nice we have options at VA and Fed prisons at least. Much appreciated!

When did you first enroll in EC's program? Some graduates are grandfathered in if they enrolled before a certain date.

PIXIE RN, when did you graduate from Excelsior? Can you tell me more about how you managed to get licensed in CA as an Excelsior Grad? Thanks!

I moved to California as an ASN Excelsior grad with 4 years experience in 2012. It can be done and it is not that difficult. I have my California nursing license within 4 months of moving to California. I am living and working in San Diego at an ER now. In fact, all of my education is online including starting law school in 2 months.

Please tell me more Etwolanyk! How did you managed to get licensed in CA?

I am not licensed in California, I never claimed to be. I graduated in 2008, enrolled in 2006, so I am not able to endorse.

Sorry Pixie, it was etwolanyk I wanted to hear from. I got the link mixed up. Thanks for responding though.

Thank you. When did you graduate excelsior? Any help us most appreciated!

I am interested in your situation. I just completed EC and am licensed in NJ. I plan on moving to San Diego in 2 years. I was under the impression that I could get licensed in NJ, get a job and experience in NJ then be endorsed in CA. I would love more information on your situation. If you could email me at [email protected]

etwolanyk is the person you need to connect with. He/she has not responded to my inquiry about getting licensed in CA. I am at least trying to transfer my LVN from NC to CA; Not sure if I should finish Excelsior, but probably won't.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Etwolanyk posted that one time 18 months ago and hasn't been back since to clarify

Yes, since there was only ever one post for this individual, I don't think we can count on this person as being legitimate source for CA licensing as an Excelsior grad. Time to make a call to the CA BORN Edward. Let us know what you discover.

Here's the official policy.

Board of Registered Nursing - Excelsior College

The only verified person who graduated EC's distance ASN program and obtained licensing as an RN in CA was also an attorney and subsequently completed a BSN.
