California Excelsior graduate after 2003, pls help!

Published

Hello,

I am a current Excelsior College student (all exams and FCCA completed) preparing for CPNE. My problem is that due to my husband's job, our family has relocated to California which no longer accepts EC graduates due to lack of clinical hours provided by EC. I do hold a current CA LVN license.

Are there any EC graduates after 2003 that live in CA that was able to become an RN in CA? If so, what did you do to get around this situation?

I am so close to finishing my RN education and this is a great opportunity for my husband, but I don't want to remain an LVN/LPN, so does anyone have any ideas to get around this (other than leaving my husband, because I still like having him around :))

Thanks

Florida is another state that doesn't except excelsior grads. However, they will except a nurse through endorsement from another state. I will take my NCLEX in a different state then request endorsement.

Well I guess my question should be..... has anybody done the Endorsement, because I am being told that Endorsement will not cut it in California because the BON still require you to meet the educational requirements of becoming an RN (which they don't accept via EC).

It's true that it hasn't been accepted as CA (and other boards of nursing) look at what education credential permitted you to sit for initial licensing. Since the Excelsior ADN would be your initial qualifying credential you would not meet the educational requirements for licensing by endorsement per the current CA BRN standards.

Other states that won't accept EC ADN for direct/initial licensure will accept endorsement with verified experience working as an RN for a specified number for hours, for example in VA BoN you can endorse a license after 900 hours (I think...I'm not in VA) of working experience as an RN.

Not tru anymore, they accept out right... got the email from flbon from december...

If you were to get a job with in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system they don't care where you got your RN through. So if you are licensed in one state as an RN and then worked at the Veterans Affairs with an out of state RN license you should be able to work in Cali that way.

Absolutely not true. Florida does accept Excelsior grads and I know plenty people who have been hired. I've even asked my own hospital if it would be a problem having an Excelsior degree and they won't. Perhaps it is at the individual facility's discretion whether or not they want to hire an Excelsior grad.

Thank you all for your responses. It appears that my only option to working in CA as an RN, would be to hold my RN licensure in another state and try to find a position with the VA until either CA BON changes their decision about Excelsior students or we move again. I started researching and there are a few VA locations within a reasonable distance from my house.

This is very disheartening after working so hard to get to this point in my education. :(

No matter what happens, hold your head up high and be proud that you have made it this far. I wish you the best of luck with everything. When it comes to applying for the jobs with the VA keep applying everytime you see an opening. Even apply for volunteer positions because that helps get your foot in the door for a job.

What are the educational requirements of of the Ca BoN that excelsior lacks? Can those requirements be attained after passing the NCLEX?

No. Excelsior is a challenge exam based program with clinical competency demonstrated at the end via CPNR. CABRN requires clinical rotations to be completed concurrently with the class work.
