Why do I have to call lab to remind them of timed blood draws being drawn, well, on time?
Why do I have to call dietary to make sure the ordered supplements are on the tray?
Why do I have to call pharmacy to refill the Pyxis?
Why do I have to call supply to tell them that they smooshed two types of IVF together in the supply Pyxis and they need to sort it out?
A STAT imaging call to radiology is our job, but why do I have to follow up 30 minutes later?
Even if I'm busy, I have to check orders every 30 minutes because STAT orders are put in without a courtesy call to the nurse!
I wish, as an orientation exercise, every department of the healthcare team was required to shadow a nurse for a day. I think many eyes would be opened.
My pet peeve is patients and family constantly asking what time the doctor will be in. And of course I get blamed for them sitting there all day because the doctor decides to saunter in at 8:00 at night. One person actually went to my manager because the doctor came at 1700 and that I should have told them this doctor rounds late. Well the doctor was there at 0930 the day before. She told my boss that I should have a schedule to provide the family and patients on doctors rounding times.Sent from my iPhone using allnurses.com
Preach.
Thought of a night shift one!
Don'tcha love the family member that decides that 2300 is the perfect time to need something that can only be handled by case management? And then they get mad because they need that insurance letter *now* or whatever. Their anger is usually directly proportional to how long the situation has been drug out by them (numerous calls from case management, unfinished paperwork, etc.) and how many times they've been told that case management works 9-5 Monday through Friday.

I thought I was going to get slugged by a guy once who desperately wanted some proof that his girlfriend's aunt was in the hospital so that he could "get a few days off work to be able to visit X." Came in about 0100. I told him that he'd have to come back in the morning because I wasn't even certain how to approach that issue with HIPAA, him not actually being family, etc. He became so irate...and the lovely couple only stayed with their aunt for maybe thirty minutes before "going out to smoke" and never coming back.
Yep...my personal favorites are having to trouble shoot every piece of equipment and being responsible for maintenance. Ummmm....isn't it bioengineering's job to make sure the equipment functions properly and to keep track of equipment and when it needs to be retagged, etc.?
Manager actually said to me, it's not like we can expect them to come down here and know how to use our equipment. Why yes, actually! That's the whole stinking point! They are supposed to!

The PRINTER. I've spent way too many times trying to fix the printer. It's not like the tech people are going to come pass meds while I'm doing their job.

Or the med scanners. They break at 2am and you get yelled at for not scanning enough meds on the night shift. "Why didn't you file a ticket with the Help Desk?" I did but, unlike nurses, IT doesn't work in the middle of the night...

The printer, the fax, copier, the pyxis, the BP machine, pulse ox, etc. I became "Nick Burns The company computer guy" from the SNL skits.

Yes this!! How am I suppose to know to shake the toner, do a printer dance, push this button and pull this lever to make it work? Even though I'm going back to school for IT lol. But still I'm not in the IT department yet I'm still a nurse darn it.

Don't you guys know that we are able to do everything and be everywhere at once? I am pretty sure that was in my job description. Which is why I am positive that first year intern called me from the patient bedside the other day to ask me to come in and take this patient's blood pressure. Because obviously placing a cuff on the patient and pushing a button was way beyond his pay grade! I should know better. LOL!
