"OMG! My patient just peed in his urinal and it spilled in the bed! I am so busy I just can't deal with Mr. X across the hallway in VFib. I have this urine to clean up! He can't lay in his urine - he'll have major skin breakdown! Did I show you my skin? I have a rash right here in my groin! Oh, I think it might be some weird cancer or something because I did travel out of the country last weekend. Did I tell you that I got robbed on the plane? OMG! It was horrible! and the robber spilled his urinal too! CAn you believe it? Oh, that reminds me..... I have to go change his linen! I just don't have time to do anything. I'm so busy! I know you have 12 patients susy-q, but could you please help me with this bed change? My back went out when the robber took my wallet from me forcefully! Yes he did! He just grabbed it right out of my hand and I fell in the aisle of the plane! Could you please just change the bed for me while I just sit right down in this chair and chart my last 15 minutes w/ him?"

We've heard it all before!:chuckle

One thing about the DQ's: they are always good for a laugh. I used to work with one that was always telling us all about the terrible things that had happened to her that week(we worked weekend option together, so she had all week to have so many adventures!!) :D She finally shut up for awhile when someone pointed out to her that she had already told us twice within the same year that her mother had died that week.

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I am a drama queen. It's been 4 years since my last self induced dramatic ordeal.

(from the group) HI SARAH!

Yeah, I was a pretty bad drama queen myself. In defense, I was heavily involved with the theater growing up and was (still am) a talented actress. What I have found in my life is that once a drama queen experiences a few TRUE dramas (real life traumatic events beyond their control) an awakening occurs. Now this may not be true for all, but in my case it is.

Once I saw just how much chaos life can hurl at you, I realized how much energy I was wasting creating chaos for myself.

As for dealing with a drama queen, the best thing to do is act disinterested (shouldn't be too hard, probably won't even have to "act :D ). A drama queen will seek out those who will be a part of their drama. The old saying "ignore it and it'll go away..."

"Our" queen has episodes of temper tantrums- stamping feet, yelling to get her way and yes she cries crocodile tears. She persistantly emotionally vomits on her coworkers. Anyone who "calls" her on this gets reported to the unit manager for, "Picking on her." What astounds me is that she has been allowed to get away with this behavior with little intervention. Our manager at one time said, " You have to take it easy on her. She just isn't like the rest of us." I think everyone has drama queen moments but being a true drama queen is a way of life!!!

shall we use King:D

I worked on a unit with not one but 5 drama queens, not counting one unit clerk. On the days they all worked it was a madhouse. I had to leave the floor just to use the bathroom(one was always in there crying). The HN could not be bothered for important issues, like 4 vial of morphine are missing since the am count, and last but not least, they had dozens of phone calls. Needless to say, I am glad to be away from that unit. Now you might ask, how did patients get care? We did what we could for their sickest patients but with our own patient load, most days several of the less acute patients just did without care.

I am very careful now to just act like I listen for so long, then I say, excuse me, it is time for me to give meds to 405, or I have to call the doctor. If they don't have an appreciative audience, they learn to leave you alone. Just be subtlethough, most drama queens are also vipers when given the chance.

Until now, I thought it was just our unit! I'm glad we're not alone!

We don't have just one, we also have several. Each of them have their own little twisted manipulated ways about them.

The worst one is always discussing her horrible home life, talking about all of the anti-depressants she takes. The assignments she gets are always the WORST. "OMG, I have to give TWO baths today!!!" And when we get back that night, do you think she even gave one? :) She'll claim she's evening out the baths.

I feel sorry for the day charge nurses, because all of the drama queens work on the day shift. Luckily, we don't have even one on nights. Everyone is really laid back, we all get along, we don't complain about our assignments.... and then day shift rolls in, and half of them are always whining and moaning about EVERYTHING, in a very LOUD way.

Can't we all just get along? :)

Specializes in Critical Care Baby!!!!!.

Ya know.......our job is hard enough without having to deal with all that BS. There are drama queens in every unit across the country and the world! What are we to do?

I have worked in several different ICU's and I have worked all shifts! Not ONE hospital/shift/unit I have worked in has been exempt from this phenomenom!!!! The chaos and drama encircles these people like the cloud of dust and dirt that encircles Pig Pen from the "Peanuts"!!!!! LOL And, on second thought, that is just what their "drama" is dirt and dust! It needs to be cleaned out of the units and hospitals worldwide!!!!!

I, for one, know that my life would be SOOOO much easier without them!!!!:D
