Ever notice this about allnurses?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

It regulary happens that someone posts a question or brings up a topic, and is immediately told "This has been discussed before. Do a search."

Then-

When someone does a search and posts in the threads they find, someone will tell them "Did you notice how old this thread is?"

So, what thread was that on?

It doesn't much bother me to see topics rehashed. If it isn't interesting, I just skip it.

Then again, I see myself entering the point in my life where I'll be able to plan my own surprise parties.

Don't forget "Help! I just took the NCLEX and I'm freaking out!"

"ADN or BSN"

"Anyone going to school online"?

and that all time classic-

"Help! I just took the NCLEX and I'm freaking out!"

Ad nauseum.

I hardly ever read those threads anymore.

When I post in an old thread, however, I'm regularly told "Didn't you see the date on this thread?":uhoh3:

Threads are not like milk- they don't expire, lol.

I am so guilty of posting to an old thread and reminded of it. I just forget to look at the dates sometimes and the posts are very interesting.:nono:

Another thing that bugs me:

I've noticed that some (not all) students will ask things about school or clinical work, saying they're having a hard time with something (understandable), and people will give the total answer. So all that's left for someone to do is to highlight, copy, and paste.

I'm not saying that all the people that ask for help are looking for someone to do their work for them, but i have gotten that impression form a few off the OPs of those threads, and then there's their homework practically done for them on the thread. I might give clues or links on threads, give the OP hints, like that, but i'm not doing their homework. To me, it defeats the purpose of learning if the answers are just written out like that.

And i'm quite sure i'll get flamed for that, have before, but, oh well.

Just a note, at the bottom of the Page there is a Box that states Similar threads.... alot of them are old.... and yes I have posted to those not realizing that the thread was old.... most of the time I just Lurk.... But if I do have to Vent about my day I go to my journal.... There I can vent.... It just feels good to Type it out...sometimes.

Just a quick explanation ...... "I know this has been discussed before, but ......." or "I know this is an old thread, but ......"

If that happened, then you'd probably very rarely hear "do a search" and "this thread is so old!"

Great idea. I always think that the delivery of one's message has an impact on the response they'll get. A blunt "How do I get into nursing school"? is likely to be met with groans and eyerolls.

A "I'm interested in nursing school. I know this subject is probably taked to death here and I'm the billionth one asking for suggestions. Is it better to go to my local college in person to ask for an appointment or start making phone calls? Is there an area on this forum where I can look some of this info up?" is a much better, thought out endeavor and would likely illicit more responses. ;)

I understand there are new people but the only thing I find a little bit annoying is when students come on here asking for "help" with an assignment as a way to get out of doing their homework, too.

But with the redundant subjects, maybe the problem could be remedied by making a whole new newbies only section.

Another good idea. That way they can fiddle around with the forum for a bit and learn to navigate. Although honestly, It didn't really take me all that long to get the hang of things and for stuff I didn't find easily, I posted questions in the appropriate places.

It's just kind of realizing that everything is NOT made for the general forum. Reading the Sticky's helps too.

Then again, there's the "charting bloopers" thread, which should never die.

In fact, it should be given its own MR number & bracelet.

Just to show you how consistant I am, in good faith answered a question IMO to a question already asked previously and by the same person! Oh yeah, I was instantly reminded. So hard to be perfect.....

To me, it defeats the purpose of learning if the answers are just written out like that.

I agree with you. At a non-nursing site I belong to, it's actually built into the Terms of Service that students seeking homework help must post their attempts to answer the questions. Staff members at that site will delete posts not following that procedure. I think that approach to the problem is a little heavy-handed though.

The people who don't like to see repeat posts/questions don't have to read them. No one is twisting arms or forcing anyone to answer, right? As long as the posters are following the rules of the board, then who cares how many times a question has been asked.

As a nursing student, we are often intimidated by the nurses who don't want to be bothered with us in a hospital setting....we should not have to be intimidated here, where we are just seeking help or opinions.

Don't want to read the posts, then move along to something the sparks your interest.

That's probably a record number of thanks. I guess it's always good to talk about negative things, and some things need to be said, but it's also a bit disappointing that a criticism receives so much thanks, and goes on for page after page. :chair:
