Hi everyone...I am currently a pre-nursing student who cant wait to begin a nurse...but I have one BIG hurdle to get over....my weak somach

This may sound dumb but I was just wondering if during nursing school or even on the job did you ever gag in front of anyone and they saw you or actually vomit? That is my BIGGEST fear right now LOL Because I know I am going to be gagging my like crazy especially in the beginning until I get used to the gross stuff and was wondering if this is a problems other may have had

I vomited....in a patient's bathroom...Had a migraine....vomiting helped.

Oh man! I thought I was the only one to ever do that!! I barely made it into her bathroom, and when she heard me puking, she got out of bed and brought me a washclot! She was so funny, a little older lady in her 80s, bent over in her bathroom, holding my hair out of my face while I was sick and giving me her washcloth.

My migraines get me like that every once in a while, and vomiting does make mine feel better!!

I thought I was the only one too. It does help even if its just a little vomit. Then some tylenol and cold water and sleep. My migraines come in a blue moon and they are stress induced. i get to the point where I can't focus my eyes and I get all hot and sweaty...it sucks.

How very nice of the little ol' lady to help you. People looked at me funny when I vomited in the patient's bathroom. All I got was "you ok?"....no one held my hair back....I'm bitter about that...just kidding.

Now, that is too cute!

I hope to be that kind of nurse!! Although those are big shoes to fill! Kudos to you!! What a blessing you had to have been him!! WOW!:redbeathe

i had a 13 yo hospice pt who was vomiting his feces, blood and tissue/pieces of his tumors.

we're talking about abrupt and projectile vomiting.

those present, either scurried out of the room or turned their backs.

i jumped onto his bed so i could hold him while he vomited...

but the smell made me gag so much that i ended up vomiting.

i chose not to go running in the bathroom, because i didn't want to abandon him.

he was absolutely terrified so i chose to puke with him.

Yeah - and mine usually hit me every month, around PMS time, or sometimes more frequently. I have go to my PCP's office this week to turn in a spit hormone test to see if miine are R/T hormones, if not maybe they are just stress related. My PCP is great about mine. They don't ever mind calling in something, or letting me come in for an IM injection if it's too bad.

I took Imitrex one time SQ and ended up in the ICU in SVT. No more for me!

I've gagged if changing an extremely large stinky runny dirty diaper. I've also dry heaved while taking the output from an ostomy and attaching it to a feeding tube and putting it back in the fistula on the other side. BARF! This is so gross and I hate when the Drs order it.

First semester nursing school..i had a patient with dumping syndrome, i had to collect her poop from the the hat in the bathroom and poor it into a sealed container for lab testing...needless to say i was holding the cup in one hand, the hat in another and pucking in the toilet at the same time! i was enclosed in a small bathroom doing all of this, my soon to be best friend came in to help and ending up leaving cuz i was heaving so hard...i walked out of the bathroom and accomplished my mission of getting the poop in the container and standing outside the bathroom door is my instructor..as soon as she saw me she started laughing and crying...apprently i had mascara running down my face and look ridiculous. needless to say i invested in waterproof mascara after that day.

i have since built up my tolerance a bit to not puke so quickly but occasionaly things will still turn my stomach....i, like someone else on here always put a great smelling vapor under my nose before i go in to something i know i might not be able to handle :barf02:

And that makes you one awesome nurse! :yeah:

I'm a nurse extern in a busy I.C.U. I recently helped a nurse dig out poop of an exderly compacted patient. The pile of poo was as big as my head! I thought I was gonna gag...but I didn't. You're always stronger than you think you are.

Nope... never.

I went into nursing after I had my kids and dealt with all their messes. Also a farmer's daughter and seen it all.

I also threw up in a pt's bathroom my first semester of nursing school. I had some good friends who would help me out, and that made it better.

I am now a dialysis nurse and can handle being covered in someone's blood from head to toe, but I just don't do well with human waste:barf01:
