Hello All!
I am planning a move back to Oregon and am trying to figure out which city to pick. I love snow and snow sports in the winter and gardening and cycling/hiking the rest of the year. I don't like it too hot and dry in the summer. I also, need my arts and culture. Which town from the above list would best fit me in Oregon? Any help would be appreciated!

I lived in Eugene before moving to the Beaverton-Hillsboro area for school. Eugene has wonderful cycling paths and natural routes and quite a few buttes to hike up. Reasonably close to Willamette Pass and Mt. Bachelor for the snow sports. It gets a bit warm in the summer, but not more so than anywhere else in Oregon (that I know of) other than the coast. Definitely a lot of cultural events, arts shows and live music in the Spring and Summer. I haven't lived in any of the other towns on your list, so can't speak for them, though Bend is definitely a winter sports town.

from that list i would say Eugene would fit the bill. There are a moderate amount of arts and cultural activities, theater and concerts. Also they have a nice (but small) saturday market, and are not far from snow sports on bachelor, hoodoo or hood.

I love the beautiful small town next to Medford, it is called Shady Cove. My husband and I may retire there someday. Deer come to your backyard to graze on the grass, the Rogue River flows near by, and it does snow there too.
Right now we live in Portland, which is near everything, the Willamette River, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, cultural arts, plays, colleges, sports, on and on. I love this city, but Shady Cove has my heart.
No matter which city you chose they all have something special to offer. Oregon is gorgeous!!!

I live in Medford, which is close to Ashland (~12 miles). I absolutely LOVE this beautiful small town. Read a little bit about it yourself here:
http://www.el.com/to/ashland/
Shakespeare Fest is great, along with the outdoor concerts in Jacksonville (Britt Fest)...another great little town.
If I could afford to live in Ashland I would (median home price is about 500,000). It is very quaint, has good food...and of course Mt. Ashland/Mt. Bachelor for all your outdoor winter addictions. However, we do get pretty warm summers (August will average 100+). A/C is a must. I have lived in the Rogue Valley for 4 years now...moved from CA and really like it here. What type of nursing/facility are you looking to work in? RVMC is working on magnet status here in Medford and I have a lot of friends that work for them and are pretty happy with their jobs.

Yes, I know alot about that area. I worked at RVMC nearly 5 years and lived in Ashland. I never thought I'd consider buying a house in Medford, but financial reality had to set in sometime. I've been away about 5 years and now it's time to settle down. I've changed specialties from ICU to tele/PCU. What does it mean to have magnet status? Thanks for your input!
OH! you should do Findmyspot.com (it may be findyourspot.com) it is fun and gives a really good comprehensive list of cities you would like and then links you to the city page for more info. It also gives you a job outlook, rental and real estate average prices etc... A great site!
Findyourspot.com votes for Eugene, too! Thanks for the idea! I can't wait to move home to Oregon! Now, I just need a job.

Hi, everyone...
I kinda of crashed your thread here, but I've been thinking alot about moving to Oregon after school. From everything I've read, Eugene looks great. How hot does it get? Does it snow alot? I'm from Texas (a/k/a the burning pit of hell in summer). I'm looking for a place that I can actually go outside and do things in the summer, but I'm a real weenie when it comes to cold weather (I'm originally from Illinois). For those of you that are familiar with Eugene...what are your thoughts? How's the job market/pay scale? I know real estate is much more expensive than it is here in Houston. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hello,
Funny you should ask about Eugene since I was the one who started this thread. I moved to Eugene about 3 weeks ago during a heat wave and we're having another one this weekend. It may get as hot as 100, but it doesn't last very long, maybe a few days, and then it's cooler, again. Most homes (unless they are newer) don't have airconditioning because, historically, they haven't needed it. We have some humidity, but not compared to Alabama, where I grew up. The nights always cool down a lot compared to the days and I hear that the winters are very mild. You'll have to drive to find snow. People here are very active in the summer and I see people out riding there bikes at all hours no matter the temperature or weather. So far, I like the area for it's green spaces, rivers, and bike paths. It's not far from the mountains and the coast. I have a lot of exploring to do! You can check out the two hospitals in the area and they are called Sacred Heart and McKenzie-Willamette. Both are planning to build new facilities in the near future. They list their pay on the particular job you look into on their respective websites.
Hope this helps!

Winters are pretty mild here compared with much of the rest of the country. We get one or two significant cold snaps about every other year.........some with snow, some without. A couple of years ago we had several snowstorms that dumped an average of 10 inches up in the hills above Albany (which is roughly 35-40 miles north of Eugene), but that's pretty rare. The main drawback to Western Oregon winters is the looooooooong rainy season (November-May in some years) and then we also have a tendency toward cold, wet, gray springs........I hate that! But our summers are near perfection, with an average high temp of 80-82 degrees during the hottest part, and our autumns are gorgeous, so there's plenty to love about Oregon as well.
eugene sounds so great...thanks for the info. good place to release my inner hippie. husband is an artist and loves to ride bikes, so i think he would love it. snowchaser...please keep me up to date on your adventures. i'd love to hear about how you're doing in a new city!
