Engagement/Wedding Ring Question

Published

I just got engaged, but for now have a "stand in" ring so my fiance can save up and get me a "better" (read: more expensive -- it's what he wants and I'm fine with that lol) one. Well I've been looking, and I found one that is absolutely gorgeous, but it's morganite which some people say is too soft for a job such as nursing where you use your hands a lot. Opinions?

I'm one of those never take my ring off girls. Always have been.

Morganite is a stone that is fairly inexpensive and has a pink/peachy color to it. It's absolutely gorgeous, but it's not that hard (rated a 7.5-8 on the MOHS scale while in comparison a diamond, the hardest of all the rated materials on the scale is a 10.) I'm not one of those girls that needs something expensive or needs a diamond, but I am the kind of girl who will take what is given to her :)

It sounds lovely. I can't imagine that it would matter what sort of stone it is, durability wise. You will be washing your hands frequently, not bashing it against a concrete wall (at least one hopes not :wacky:)

I like the idea of black diamonds, or a black stone. My high school class ring had an onyx in it. I'm probally not a good one to give advice on wedding rings, since I never even had a ring in my first marriage. Instead, I bought a convertible. Priorities (at least to me).

Good luck on your marriage!

OOooh...ooo...I love this question!

OK, as an FYI, I'm GIA certified in colored stones and spent most of my pre-nursing life as a goldsmith and am still fascinated by gemstones. Amazing what we old nurses know….eh?

And there's your nurse who also knows gems!

LOL I knew there'd be someone around here! Thank you for the information, that was very interesting!!

When I got engaged my husband went all out (unbeknownst to me) and bought me this beautiful ring with a high setting and Victorian etching. I love it! I don't wear it to work though.

I found a simple claddagh ring and wear that. And I have a simple wedding band now.

My beautiful ring sits in the safe because I'm afraid that I will lose it.

My wedding ring is a high setting and a marquee diamond on top of the high setting. I do not wear mine to work because when I tried it always tore holes in my gloves.. So when I work I have just a simple gold band and the only reason I wear that is because I feel naked without something on that finger!

I wear my ring on a chain as a necklace when at work, or when doing any other activity that make damage the stone or ring. Of course, Ive been asked a lot if my fiance is away in the military (not so), but it makes me feel better having it with me (I'm a never-take-your-ring-off girl too), and I dont have to worry about damaging it/germs/tearing your gloves 20 times a day.

My engagement ring is gorgeous. However, it sits on top of my finger quite a bit and I just know that putting on gloves would be a nightmare. I also don't want to damage my ring with the daily rituals we go through-handwashing, gloves, bodily fluids, turning patients (don't want to scratch them!). I have considered getting a plain band to wear at work, but honestly, that is just not my ring. It wouldn't have the sentimental value to me. I am planning to go ringless at work and wear my ring all the time outside work. :)

I tried the I'm not wearing my ring at work routine with my spouse and it earned me three nights sleeping on the couch :D

Lol! Damn! Well I don't wear mine, not because I don't want to but because when I was pregnant it didn't fit & after that I just never put it on again. Haha! My husband never gave me any grief.

I may have been exaggerating a little but I do put it back on after every shift and before getting home cause I know better :D

I don't know why you came to AllNurses when you should've gone elsewhere for specific information on stones.

If it sits in the safe all the time, you might as well lose it. If you lose it, you won't have it and can't wear it. But you're not wearing it now . . . .
