I wasnt exactly offered a job. The owner wanted me to come in so she could try me out to see if I would work out. She said she couldnt offer me a job because my references had not called back. The job is in a methadone clinic which she told me was from 5-9am m-s. Turns out it starts at 6 on some days and I would probably get 20 hrs and have to come in 6 days a week. I went in for training the first day and I sawl some things that really didnt seem right. She gave a TB test without gloves to a patient and she has no medical/nursing license. I was right there and could have given the tb test but then she had her other nurse sign the paperwork that the nurse had done it. She talked kinda rude to the clients. I left the first day feeling uneasy about the job. I had not filled out any paperwork saying how much pay was or anything to show I worked there. She kept saying how she was trying me out! I started thinking about it and the fact that I was using my license in this setting. I called her about me working without a job offer and told her I couldnt come in until she could offer me a job when my references called back. She kept saying I should come into work I told her to call me when she could offer me a job so when I called her today she told me the only reference that called back was my friend(a nurse i worked with) and she would mail me a check for the day I worked. I am relieved about it and bummed the job search continues.

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Do not let someone try you out for a licensed position..(or anything where you would be expected to function)...... it could leave you in a very bad place!! Job shadowing to see if you would like a job is great, but not with you doing the work...I suspect you just managed to avoid a very bad job.. Bummer to have to keep looking but at least you still have your license!! Good luck:D

Yeah things seem a little fishy. If references were soooo important why did she bring you in at all? Just doesn't seem right. I would be shocked if you actually got a check. But maybe its just me being negative.

that is so bizarre!

from my experience, in both nursing and non nursing job hunts, "trying me out" meant i was more or less shadowing an individual who worked there, meeting my potential coworkers, getting a feel for the clientele and protocols, etc.

the fact that you noticed your license was on the line was awesome on your part. you did not have them "back you up" so to speak in either a professional or legal sense. you are lucky that they will pay you for your hours worked, because it seems to me they were trying to squeeze free labor out of you.

i hope this doesn't happen again!

best of luck

I should have listened to my gut in the first place. I want to go back to work so bad but not at the expense of my license.

Keep looking you will find something.. and don't let this eat at you.. You were smart and got out.. Good job!

and administering a tb without any nursing license---ummmmm that's gotta be illegal and practicing nursing without a license. I would call the licensing board on her if it were me. I agree--you dodged a bullet.

I'm so sorry that the job search continues, but I think you are so much better off out of that place. Best of luck to you.

I believe depending on the state MA's can do a TB test, they just can't read them. But sounds suspicious since she had another nurse sign for her that she had done it.

Anyone who is trained can do them. I used to do them as a phlebotomist and I didn't have a license at the time.

Very sincerely thank God for that and move on:)
