Emory Pre-req Questions

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hi there! I'm coming out of lurkdom again. :)

I got my acceptance letter to Emory over the holidays. I'm very excited about attending Fall 2006!

I have two pre-reqs left to complete and I'm a bit worried that I might be in a pickle. Here's the deal:

I've been re-taking some pre-reqs at Georgia Perimeter that were too old to qualify for the program. I retook A&P II last spring and Micro this past fall semester. For Emory, I need to take, according to their website, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II (with an organic component). They had said at the open house that a nutrition class I had might qualify for the Chem II, but it looks like it didn't.

My first question to anyone who might know is: Does Survey of Chemistry II qualify for the "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)" requirement?

Supposing it does, I can register for Survey of Chemistry I at GPC for the spring semester. However, I don't think Survey of Chemistry II is offered in the summer at GPC, which leaves me in a bit of a bind. Anyone think they would let me take Chem I and II concurrently since I have 3 higher level sciences than Chem I and 3 higher level math classes than the pre-req for Chem I? Or, does anyone think I can take Survey of Chem I at GPC and then Survey of Chem II at GA State as a transient student in the summer? (The GPC and GA State Survey of Chem classes seem almost identical.)

Ok, enough rambling....just having a bit of a panic attack here. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.!

I'm a Mac user. I've never had many problems though getting into school networks or running software. If need be, I just boot up VirtualPC to run software that hasn't seen the light of the goodness that is Mac. hehe ;-)

Ah, then you must be Mac compatible! :lol2:

I think that >99% of the problems people have with computers are user errors, but ask them and you'll get "My computer is broken again, if only I had a --insert whatever they don't have here-- I wouldn't be having this problem!"

I'm a Mac user. I have an iMac at home and an iBook that travels with me. Seeing as how I just shelled out $2k for the iMac, I won't be buying another computer anytime soon. Intel Mac or PPC? The new Intel ones can run XP natively on another partition with bootcamp. I'm thinking of doing that. Don't know just yet.

I'm on a PPC G4. *loves on her computer* Like I said, I really don't run into too many issues.

I'll love on your ibook if you let me, haha. I got a powerhouse PC right now, dual core athlon64 2GB of RAM etc etc bla bla bla but I need a small notebook to possibly have some notes with me at school... you know, cram before a test if we happen to get doc or pdf notes, or something.

I actually just bought a Palm LifeDrive to take to school. Nice little mobile manager with 4G RAM. Going to download a bunch of reference software onto it too. I've heard it's a little hard to work with at first, but we'll see. :)

Wow!!! Parking is $411 per year? Damn! Why do we get this letter so close to the deadline?

I know!! I put the Michael Street deck as my first choice, but I had no idea where those other parking areas were! I looked on a tiny map and they seem miles away! :-/ Hope I'm not going to have to get hiking gear to walk to the nursing building every day.

What makes me so angry is that they say you don't "need" a car so that $400 is not part of your financial aid budget. How else am I supposed to get here? Stagecoach? The bus system is awful, its too darn dangerous to walk and we aren't anywhere near a train station.

I'm giving up a staff space in Michael Street hoping to get assigned a student permit in that same deck. Staff parking is right now just under $30 a month, but its going sky high in January so I'm switching over now. They say staff don't "need" to park at work either. I say bite me, I work here and I'm taking out loans to spend more freakin time here... I oughta get free valet or something! RIDICULOUS! :angryfire

Welcome to what may be the biggest student gripe about Emory: parking...joy.

Emory's theory, is apparently, that because there's a shuttle system, that it doesn't matter where you park, and as they come up with more park & ride system programs...well, this is where the opinion "You don't need a car" comes from (which is an opinion which I DON'T share, as I believe that it DOES matter if you have to drive in 30 minutes earlier to take the shuttle to the nearest stop to the nursing school!!!) ...Anyways, I was kinda already screwed over b/c I'm living on the Clairmont campus this year, and the permit that they have there that's included with the :angryfire $$$$$$$$$$ :angryfire room and board doesn't transfer over to the main campus, so I'd have to pay the $411 anyway, which is more than a little wrong since dorms are, oh, just $8K/yr :uhoh3: ...so I'm planning on taking the shuttle everywhere, along w/the rest of the people over there, who I guarantee are just as angry as you are...

Wait...are you telling me that all of the Emory staff have to pay what comes to $400/yr for their parking?!?! Are you KIDDING me? So, if I'm reading this right, if I want to work as a nurse for CHOA, I actually have to buy a $400-freaking-dollar permit? Ok, now that's just messed up and wrong on so many levels, I'm sorry...

Ahh darnit. I feel like a dummy. I rushed out of the door today to get to work on time (get extra OT!) and forgot the blue paper that talked about parking. Can one of you pretty please post the link and what it says about password and username so I can get in line to pay parking? I'm doing a double at work (16 straight hours) plus a 2 or possible 4 additional hours of over time. When I get home tomorrow it's head -> meets -> pillow.

Well, right now its $23.33 /mo taken out of my paycheck. In January, its supposed to double. I have no idea what CHOA does for parking, if its parking is seperate or under the same system etc but if it is under the same system you'll be paying something like $600 / yr as staff by the time they change it in January. Of course, it could go up again before we graduate.

:angryfire:angryfire:angryfireSO SO WRONG! I PAY TO COME TO WORK!:angryfire:angryfire:angryfire

Of course, I can't complain. When I worked at Duke I paid almost as much AND had to ride a shuttle. Made my 20 minute commute well over an hour.

Why are you living on campus and paying so much? If you want some good apartment recomendations near campus, (for next yr, or whatever) let me know. I've already shopped it. I've been in an apartment near there since January.
