Hi there! I'm coming out of lurkdom again. :)
I got my acceptance letter to Emory over the holidays. I'm very excited about attending Fall 2006!
I have two pre-reqs left to complete and I'm a bit worried that I might be in a pickle. Here's the deal:
I've been re-taking some pre-reqs at Georgia Perimeter that were too old to qualify for the program. I retook A&P II last spring and Micro this past fall semester. For Emory, I need to take, according to their website, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II (with an organic component). They had said at the open house that a nutrition class I had might qualify for the Chem II, but it looks like it didn't.
My first question to anyone who might know is: Does Survey of Chemistry II qualify for the "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)" requirement?
Supposing it does, I can register for Survey of Chemistry I at GPC for the spring semester. However, I don't think Survey of Chemistry II is offered in the summer at GPC, which leaves me in a bit of a bind. Anyone think they would let me take Chem I and II concurrently since I have 3 higher level sciences than Chem I and 3 higher level math classes than the pre-req for Chem I? Or, does anyone think I can take Survey of Chem I at GPC and then Survey of Chem II at GA State as a transient student in the summer? (The GPC and GA State Survey of Chem classes seem almost identical.)
Ok, enough rambling....just having a bit of a panic attack here. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.!
WOW! how things have changed...we didn't have to do all that background check/drug screen stuff.
If I can add my 2 cents on the books:
The patho and assessment texts are both newer versions of the same ones I used. They are good texts...if you are really pinched I suppose you could do without the pocket assessment guide although I did use it some.
I think I have used the dictionary maybe twice. Unless you are a horrible speller, that might be one that you could do without.
We were not required to purchase a book for drug calcs so I can't speak to that. I learned it fine without the book, all I will say.
As far as pharm you definitely need to do the reading. Dr. Neville will pull some test questions from the reading...come to think of it, most all of the instructors will, so you need to do all of the reading.
As far as the reading: Here is a suggestion that worked for me. We formed a small group of 4 of us, and we split the readings (mostly med/surg) into 4 equal parts, and would summarize it for the others. But for this to work you have to have people you trust with your life and that have the same standards you do. I was very lucky that our group took really good care of each other.
One other thing, did they mention an APA handbook? You will definitely need that! Get the book, not the software, and make sure it is the latest edition. I don't remember if we had a paper due first semester, but by the 2nd we had them aplenty!

Thank you so much for all of your advice!!!
Here's a question for you. In A&P class I couldn't hear anything with the cheapo stethoscopes provided. I mean nothing, my hearing is kinda bad anyhow. What stethoscope did you use in school and what do you recommend?
Only a million? Your financial aid package is better than mine!
Haha - yeah, now that you mention it, we may have to add a few more sets of zeros to that $1,000,000 - after all, 50 trillion dollars is just pocket change to Emory...
Which in turn, means they will recommend a $400 Littman stethoscope for the minimum requirement...and I will then tell them to inform me on where exactly is this secret money stash that they think I have that is hidden so well that even I can't find it...
And Droopy - if you don't plan on being the mushy/sappy type at graduation (like the smiley indicates......) , you might be the one stuck handing out Kleenexes to everyone while the rest of us are bawling our eyes out...
Or you could just plan on joining the mushy/sappy group for a few hours...

The first time I graduated from college, I wasn't emotional or anything, I just had to pee really bad the entire ceremony! All my family wanted pics afterward so I've got all these photos of myself with the "yeah yeah I'm happy now let me go pee!" face on.

Ah, yes, I was actually the one handing out Kleenex at mine...I don't have a clue of what my reaction will be graduating nursing school...
Another question here!Has anyone looked into the uniforms yet? Does anyone know what they're going to cost us? :)
Haha, my wild uniform story - so, my studious self decided to buy the Drug Dosage book online, and of course, I needed my credit card to do that, so of course, I got the book for a wonderful $11, far less than the bookstore, but I forgot the critical step of putting the dang card back in my wallet...so, 'course I go to checkout at the store and I'm thinking to myself, "Oh-my-God-are-you-SERIOUS?" - but the salesperson was really nice about it, she's holding it so I can pick it up tommorow! But I did get the total...
Listing out the uniform (minus the shoes, did anyone notice they didn't say anything about the shoes? Or did I miss it?):
1 white lab coat
1 navy warm-up jacket
1 navy scrub top
1 navy scrub bottom
...plus the monogramming charge for the top and the warm-up jacket...
Well...go to the store w/$100 and you'll barely make it (the total's $91.something)...
And this is for one uniform...Geez, this is getting ridiculous...by the time I buy the supplies, my wallet will have this much left:

I used a Littmann classic II - worked fine, although I dont think I have any real big issues with my hearing. bought it at the ESNA sale. I know that the Emory medical bookstore carries the cheap Sprague and also Littmann I think.
Maybe see if somewhere will let you try a couple of them in the store? I know that there are electronic stethoscopes available for people with hearing impairments but they are really pricey. Unless you have a real hearing defect you might be fine with one of the Littmann models.
Find what you want and then check some prices online too. I have ordered stuff from allheart.com before and have had good luck.

I hope we're not a mooshy/sappy bunch come graduation. We're gonna be stuck together for the next two years, heh.
