Emory Pre-req Questions

Published

Hi there! I'm coming out of lurkdom again. :)

I got my acceptance letter to Emory over the holidays. I'm very excited about attending Fall 2006!

I have two pre-reqs left to complete and I'm a bit worried that I might be in a pickle. Here's the deal:

I've been re-taking some pre-reqs at Georgia Perimeter that were too old to qualify for the program. I retook A&P II last spring and Micro this past fall semester. For Emory, I need to take, according to their website, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II (with an organic component). They had said at the open house that a nutrition class I had might qualify for the Chem II, but it looks like it didn't.

My first question to anyone who might know is: Does Survey of Chemistry II qualify for the "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)" requirement?

Supposing it does, I can register for Survey of Chemistry I at GPC for the spring semester. However, I don't think Survey of Chemistry II is offered in the summer at GPC, which leaves me in a bit of a bind. Anyone think they would let me take Chem I and II concurrently since I have 3 higher level sciences than Chem I and 3 higher level math classes than the pre-req for Chem I? Or, does anyone think I can take Survey of Chem I at GPC and then Survey of Chem II at GA State as a transient student in the summer? (The GPC and GA State Survey of Chem classes seem almost identical.)

Ok, enough rambling....just having a bit of a panic attack here. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.!

regarding the PDA issue...you might want to check out the PDA forum here on allnurses. Lots of good info there.

Also there is a site at http://www.pdacortex.com that has a listserv you can join, also free software downloads. Epocrates (http://www.epocrates.com) basic version is free and I use it every day! Besides drug info it has a lot of medical calculator utilities that are very useful

A Dell PDA operates on a different operating system (pocket PC I think) than the Palm products, which use the Palm operating system. Initially there were far more programs for Palm, but now many more available for pocket PC - so the playing field is leveled somewhat.

I use a Palm Tungsten E...retails for around $200 new, but like I said check for deals. A memory card would also be useful. Epocrates basic version will not load to a memory card, but many more free programs will...

you can always pm me if you need anything.

Oh lord, I saw the classes - I've got to start converting myself to a morning person again! And redeveloping my relationship with my coffeemaker...don't usually need it in the summer, but during the school year is a different story...:lol2:

I got the packet today from Emory. Boy, if you thought 8am was early, wait til you see when skills lab and clinicals are! Glad I'm a morning person!

And they sent us homework for over the summer, a dosing calculations handbook and some terms to learn. Not so bad. LOTS of paperwork though... physicals and drug screens and background checks, oh my! Not tons of fun, but a sad necessity in this day and age.

congrats on your acceptances, ill be a senior this coming yr.. let me know if you have any questions, ill let you guys know what you really need ;)

Thanks for the offer. What DO we really need? I'm willing to invest in the things I'll have and use for a long time, but need to save money on the stuff that isn't really vital. And should we wait to buy a lot of this stuff at the ESNA sale the first week of class? Or is the uniform shop the way to go for clinical supplies? Are non-latex gloves provided or will I need to plan on bringing my own?

Also, does the nursing school bldg have Wi-Fi?

Girl, I saw that w/the classes, that was so UNFUNNY!!!! Looks like Starbucks will have them a devoted customer! I love the homework in the summer, is that like, a warning for the non-devoted, lol?

I guess they figure it'll be less work for them in the fall if we start banging our heads against the wall early and get real humble before we start classes!

I'm in night school finishing up A&P II w/ lab and H. Growth and Dev. so this new stuff is going to have to wait awhile!

My supervisor did NOT look happy when I told her about missing so much work for orientations, (2 days @ Emory, 2 days @ Northside) physicals, drug tests, have to go sign my contract out @ NS. Why is everything only open 9-5?! There goes my vacation time!

Haha, man, oh man, this'll be a ride, I'm sure...:lol2:

I'm going get the TB test and the titers done on Monday...and while I'm over there, I'll probably see if they have the book and stop to get the lab jacket, but I'm holding on the scrubs (I don't want to wait 'til the end of the summer when they'll be like, "we ran out of xs coats..." I'm little and short, so the mid-thigh lengh thing should be interesting...)

Blee1, any of these that you never used or didn't find helpful? And should we expect to see books listed for 370 later? These are nearly $500 assuming you can find them all used (HA!).

Why isn't there a smiley hemorrhaging money...:o

About the books - so I can get them used, I'm definitely thinking about stopping by the med bookstore at emory and seeing if they're there now...I'm picky about highlighting and stuff, so if I can go now and pick everything out w/o a huge crowd....hmmmmm...ah, more places to go! :)

And there really does need to be a smiley hemorrhaging money...or Visa...which will certainly be funding the books...:uhoh3:

yes, no, yes, yes.

wait for the ESNA sale, all I would get is the uniform for now (which you really wont need until about midway into the 1st semester, youll only need one pair as youll only be in the hospital once/wk, the first half of the semester will be in the lab at school).

for the most part, there is wireless access throughout the whole university including the nursing bldg.

dont bother, just read and get familiar with them. also, dont stress about the med calc readings. if you can do some simple math (add, multipy, work with fractions, etc) youll be fine, theyll teach what you need to know. i didnt even bother with that med calc book.

also, about the rest of your texts. these are the ones youll need for sure:

-assessment text

-medsurg text

-fundamentals text

-drug handbook

-lab and dx reference

i would wait until you start school before you buy the others (or not, as you will see that there are some you can do w/o ;) )

if you guys got more questions, IM me.

So, I take it this is a "Go early to buy used books in the summer or you will end up buying new" warning, or no? Since you did say wait 'til school for some of them...

Thanks!!

im saying to wait b/c youll see that in some classes, texts are used more for referencing instead of "reading".

also, expect to buy most (if not all) your books brand new. remember these are nursing texts where most of us, and eventually you guys, will keep to study and review when boards come around, etc.

Good to know this stuff... I guess I'm going to have to RE-quit my job a bit earlier so I can get some of this stuff done! Hey, glad to sort of meet you guys before class starts. I'll be the lightskinned black guy with sleepy eyes.
