Emory Pre-req Questions

Published

Hi there! I'm coming out of lurkdom again. :)

I got my acceptance letter to Emory over the holidays. I'm very excited about attending Fall 2006!

I have two pre-reqs left to complete and I'm a bit worried that I might be in a pickle. Here's the deal:

I've been re-taking some pre-reqs at Georgia Perimeter that were too old to qualify for the program. I retook A&P II last spring and Micro this past fall semester. For Emory, I need to take, according to their website, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II (with an organic component). They had said at the open house that a nutrition class I had might qualify for the Chem II, but it looks like it didn't.

My first question to anyone who might know is: Does Survey of Chemistry II qualify for the "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)" requirement?

Supposing it does, I can register for Survey of Chemistry I at GPC for the spring semester. However, I don't think Survey of Chemistry II is offered in the summer at GPC, which leaves me in a bit of a bind. Anyone think they would let me take Chem I and II concurrently since I have 3 higher level sciences than Chem I and 3 higher level math classes than the pre-req for Chem I? Or, does anyone think I can take Survey of Chem I at GPC and then Survey of Chem II at GA State as a transient student in the summer? (The GPC and GA State Survey of Chem classes seem almost identical.)

Ok, enough rambling....just having a bit of a panic attack here. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.!

oh yeah i found that calculations book on amazon for 9 bucks used w/ cd, $37.99 new.

Has anyone had problems logging into the certifiedbackground.com website? When I put my OPUS ID into the PIN box, it responds as if it has no idea who I am. I'm waiting for them to contact me.

Good to know this stuff... I guess I'm going to have to RE-quit my job a bit earlier so I can get some of this stuff done! Hey, glad to sort of meet you guys before class starts.

:welcome: Good to "meet" you too! And I know what you mean about work, I don't know how I'm going to get it all done either! They act like no one has to pay thier own rent or feed themselves. I sort of understand trying to push people toward not working during the school year, but jeez, its only July and I feel like I'm running out of time!

I'm starting this program at Northside that is a job shadowing/ externship program that starts me in the hospital immediately, so I feel like I have to get ready for that even though I haven't been to clinicals, haven't been to school, don't really have a clue what I need to get or know before I show up! On top of that its a new program this year, so I don't have the experiences of others to lean on there.

I will be working there the whole way through school and as an RN after I graduate (sort of like NEAT) so I'm afraid of making a fool out of myself and having to live with it for the next five years! Any advice on this greatly appreciated!

You'll be ok. We're all gonna have some anxiety before we get there, but once we get going things will be fine. I'm doing NEAT myself, but I never heard of the northside program. Any details?

Whoops, double post.

This is the first year for it, so no one knows much about it. Northside pays $10,000/yr to help with school, you work for them for 2 years. They also provide a paid job shadowing program Jr. yr 24+ hrs/mo and a paid externship Senior year 48+ hrs/mo. There is an option to work as a full time extern in the summer in between, which I plan on trying to do. Another really cool feature is that you are assigned a mentor who follows you all the way through school and the whole time you are employed at Northside. I haven't met mine yet, but I'm excited about that part! I feel like maybe I won't be tossed into the deep end so much with someone lookng out for me!

I only found out about the program the day before the application (and references!) was due. Mr. Hoover in student services told me about it after my financial aid collapsed the week the tuition deposit was due! I am so glad I asked! He had only had the info for a day or two at that point. I am really lucky, my application was faxed in the day it was due, all my references were late, I can't beleive I even got an interview! They were very understanding about it all.

I'm the only one from Emory, there were a total of 7 selected, the others are from GSU, KSU (one other school maybe?). At my interview they told me they have a similar program to help pay for the MSN so I may be able to take advantage of that when I move to the second part of the segue.

I have also had problems getting the certifiedbackground.com site to work. I emailed them and they said it was a problem they knew about and had fixed and I should wait two hours to try again. Well, that was last night...I tried again this morning and it still didn't work for me. Bleh.

Oh! Anyone know anything about the A&P pre-test we have to take??

I don't know anything about it but I'm gonna freshen up the week before!
