I wasn't feeling right over the past weekend with headaches and blurred vision in my left eye. I have had migraines before so figured "This too shall pass" but on Tuesday I woke with no vision in my left eye. I went to ER and was sent to an ocular specialist who diagnosed a detached retina and referred me for surgery which I had on Wednesday due to not being NPO on Tuesday. Right now, I am basically blind in my left eye and time will tell how much vision I get back. I'm off work while I recover from surgery.

So I had a recheck last Friday and I am getting some vision back. I can make out  shapes and light from dark. I mentioned to my doctor that first thing in the morning on waking I could see the lights in the ceilngs and she was very encouraged. It's just so slow and I really want to get back to the gym but since I am on disabilty it would not be a good idea. So I will just be patient.

I know it's tough to be a patient who must remain patient about their condition. In fact, it pretty much sucks to have to follow the directions you might have had to give to others at another time. I'd a thousand times rather be the caregiver than the one who needs the care to be given to them.

This has nothing to do with your eye problem, but I'm going to tell it anyway:

My brother, who has a Masters degree in Physical Therapy, is now 70 years old. He said that now he is older and suffering the same things many of his patients had come to him for....he's not so sure he was right in instructing  them in certain ways to deal with their infirmities. Now that HE is in the same spot with the same complaints, ie his being "on the other side", he truly does understand why people say "I can't" or "It doesn't help."

Anyway, I pray your vision problems will resolve in due time and will no longer be a problem.  And if the retina is wanting to detach, tell your eye surgeon that Gorilla Glue makes things STAY STUCK! ?

I can’t lie, when I first started out in nursing I was scared of older people, it was like you had 1000 grandmoms and grand pops.  They  never let you go.  I can’t remember which  patient it was or where I was when I developed such an admiration for what our older mature people go through and who they are.  For  some time now I’ve had such a deep level of respect for all of them. They are not a one size fit all. They do not all have to have the same care plans. You really have to treat them all individually and take nothing for granted. Life does come full circle and I love how your brother lived long enough to see and understand that NSIME I loved your post!

Funny about you being scared of old people....because I was totally scared of BABIES.? They can't TELL you anything but they depend on you completely! Therefore I refused ---and if not retired, I would STILL refuse --- an assignment in pediatrics! I enjoyed taking care of the old folks, though.

It's a good thing it takes all kinds of people to make the world go 'round, and we have choices! If I always had to work with babies, *I* would be scared to death! ?

So I am suffuciently healed to return to work. Going back Saturday 7/23. I am also approved for light exercise so I will be returing to the gym where I plan to do low impact aerobics in the pool.  I perfomed a cacao ceremony this am which is supposed to open my mind and heart to positive intentions. I've never done this before so not sure how it manifests in my life but it can't hurt.

I have made some decisions: ! I am officially stopping my opiode which I  have been taking for several years for pain management. I haven't taken it for over a month and pain is bearable so no better time to try this than now.

Lastly I am making a move to remove extra sugar from my diet. I don't do artificial sweetener per my GI docs recommendation. I don't like stevia but has anyone tried monk fruit?

I thank every one for the positive support you have given me.
