Elizabeth Warren says doctors, nurses don't treat black women same way as other women

Nurses Headlines

Is it bash medical professions month and I just didn't realize it?

Don't get me wrong I do believe that prejudice exists but according to Ms. Warren, the only concievable reason for the increased materials deaths in African American women is due to doctors and nurses being prejudice. This is absolutely ludicrous.

As a nurse of color this discussion board is alarming with how many nurses are biased and are constantly refuting evidence based research that women of color are not treated equitably in healthcare.

Calling the Senator “Pocahontas” because she identifies with Native American heritage is boldly unprofessional and many people of color would say racial.

Nurses really need to get to step it up. Your discriminatory, prejudicial, and racial biases are showing. If you don’t believe what she’s saying: do research.

You don’t have to be “logical” about it. There’s studies on top of studies about it. Honestly, the first step is to acknowledge you have a bias and that these biases exist. Then taking the steps to try to combat these biases.

Heres maybe a starting point: http://www.ihi.org/communities/blogs/how-to-reduce-implicit-bias

Oh I Totally believe it exists. I didn't make myself clear. And, while the blog you included needs to be said, I've already incorporated those principals into who I am. But racism much more pervasive than something limited to health care workers. How about education? Housing policy? Why pick on us folks who knock themselves out every day sacrificing their own needs for the needs of others? Pick on the bankers who red line mortgages keeping neighborhoods segregated. Like I said, I agree with most of her policies but not her presentation. I hope I don't have to vote for her:)

“what they’re telling us is they are privileging nonindigenous definitions of being indigenous.”

Membership in a Native American tribe is “very precious to us,” Mr. Hoskin, the Cherokee Nation secretary of state, said in a phone interview. “It’s not just a card that we hold. It’s something that we consider a dear possession, and so we don’t take it lightly (NY Times, 2018).”

Yea. Didn't Elizabeth apologize? Making it all better? ?

She did it to gain a easy ladder to her comfy position.

She did it to gain votes from unsuspecting people (naive, no doubt).

She crossed the line when labeling us, nurses, as being prejudiced.

Take this then. I'm a "ethnic minority" in this nation. My race actually has been SENT into concentration camps in this nation, in states like California.

Prejudice. A subjective variable that cannot be quantified nor observed, being stated as the one singular thing that explains a outcome in the health industry.

According to Elizabeth Warren.

Nah, not buying it. Seriously, how dare she place us nurses (and even the MDs) as being prejudiced for our patients.

The fact of the matter is, prejudice and the large wage gap between people of color and whites drive most social issues in western society. I don't think you meant to come off as you did, but to suggest that this isn't true (despite years and years of research on inequality and health disparities well known to most who work in healthcare) is to be in denial. Or, it shows a large amount of privileged thinking and unconscious bias.

I'm not white. I am a person of "color."

So when I see myself, and the results of other people of "color," especially when this politician dare accuses ME (and you included. all nurses and all doctors) of being prejudiced at our patients..

she crossed the line.

I'm black. What she said is 100% true, has been well known for quite some time, and is not an "us against the world" type of situation as you are trying to push it. Racial bias in healthcare is a very real thing and your replies only suggest ignorance of the fact. That's it.

Thank you!!

All nurses aren’t “good” nurses. Nurses are still humans. There will be times personal biases affect your care. It’s important to not act omnipotent and oblivious to the fact that there are nurses that perform inequitable healthcare or don’t advocate for their patients accordingly. Please stop acting like nurses are impervious to these issues.

In my post when I first started my views with this thread,

I stated: there will always be prejudiced "individuals."

That is just how the world is.

However, to include everyone in a professional field of being prejudiced or biased when it comes for the well being of our patients?

If you can understand that prejudice is a part of everyday life then it’s surely not beyond you to comprehend how these prejudices, especially in a country founded upon racism, can slip into the professional world and all other aspects of life. It’s not up for debate. It’s proven, and it’s not just nurses that are guilty of it, but the healthcare system and everyone involved as a whole.

My point exactly!

How dare she alleges and claims that we, nurses, have prejudice in our minds when it comes to our patient care?

And people actually defend her. Which astonishes me.
