  1. It may have happened to you, but it doesn’t happen to White women at the same rate as Black women. The research shows an alarmingly high rate of poor outcomes. “African American women die in pregnancy or childbirth at a rate of three to four times the rate of white women – and this has been true for fifty years.” Maternal morbidity and mortality is an indicator of how well a country is doing economically, and it’s a political piece that should be addressed in the U.S.
  2. All nurses aren’t “good” nurses. Nurses are still humans. There will be times personal biases affect your care. It’s important to not act omnipotent and oblivious to the fact that there are nurses that perform inequitable healthcare or don’t advocate for their patients accordingly. Please stop acting like nurses are impervious to these issues.

Creating Resume Prior to Graduating Nurse Practitioner

It may help to google NP resumes/ CV. There are a lot online that are very helpful.
  4. As a nurse of color this discussion board is alarming with how many nurses are biased and are constantly refuting evidence based research that women of color are not treated equitably in healthcare. Calling the Senator “Pocahontas” because she identifies with Native American heritage is boldly unprofessional and many people of color would say racial. Nurses really need to get to step it up. Your discriminatory, prejudicial, and racial biases are showing. If you don’t believe what she’s saying: do research.

    Nurse Practitioner Residencies

I asked the folks interviewing me about what the preceptorship would be like and was told it was a gradual move from a preceptor to being on my own. They didn’t say if that would be in week 6 or if that was in week 36 though. Do you feel as if you’re just being used as free labor by that health system in essence since you’re mostly independent ? Also did you have to sign a contract to work at the health system when you are finished with the fellowship?

    Nurse Practitioner Residencies

I'm currently applying to a residency program and wondered what your thought was about your current program. How many hours do you work in direct clinical verses class time ? What’s your support like in terms of preceptors ? Are they hands on the full year or have you been alone for a good bit of it with them being available via text/ phone ?

Hello boogalina, Thanks for responding. I did look at the PCCN info versus the CCRN according to the AACN. Both seem hard !

    Job Offer Dilemma

Nursing_Mamacita Thank you so much for responding. I ended up going to the AACN and reading about the PCU (STD ICU), and it helped me in making my decision. I need to get out of the mindset that ICU is the end all be all and work on assessments and caring for my patients while in the step down ICU.

    Job Offer Dilemma

Hello, I will be a future new grad nurse in December, and have recently applied to several critical care nursing residency opportunities. During one of my interviews, I was told the critical care position was being altered into a step down icu opportunity. The ICU was changing its bed numbers to include some step down icu beds. The manager stated vents would still be on the step down ICU, but that I would likely be there 6 months to a year. I recently was notified that I got the job, but am wondering if I will be satisfied with this. My questions to you all are: 1) What is the difference between a step down icu versus an ICU? 2) Is a step down the same as a progressive care unit? 3) How would this affect my goal of being CCRN certified in the future? Thanks for taking the time to read this.
