I am in nursing school. Also enrolled in an EMT-b course right now. Have practical and State test for EMT in about 10 days from now. I was at a career fair at my school and found a hospital down the block (literally like 15 minute walk at most) hires nursing students who have EKG and phlebotomy skills. I have an interview for an EMT job the 24th and will be trying to get another interview next week. I plan to work and save money to take the EKG/Phlebotomy course in the summer and then see about getting a job at that hospital once I get it.
Only problem is I know of only 1 place to get the certification, which I will inquire about next week when I have some free time.
Can anyone recommend me places to get this and about how much it would cost?

hello. go to this website and put in your borough and some schools should show up for the training you are looking for. also if you make less than 56,000 a year, workforce 1 will give you a training grant for up to 3,800 dollars for your training. you do not have to pay it back. contact your local center for more info. they have them in every borough.thats the route im taking since i cant afford classes right now. manhahhatn institue, abc training, ny medical institute in queens also have training. if you are just getting phlebotomy\ekg training it could run about 1000. but if you take the cna + ekg|plebotomy classes they cost about 2,400. nyc training guide - home and you have more chances of getting a job in that field (patient care technician). good luck to you.

is there a program like that in texas?? and for the original post can you tell me your experiences for the EMT class, im enrolling and registering for my class tomorrow.
Prettyladie, I actually took an EMT B course a while back. The course was about 6 months long if I remember correctly. I just want to emphasize that EMT's scope of practice is very different from that of nurses. They specialize in pre hospital care and not really hands on patient care. If you are going for nursing I personally would recommend trying a Certified Nurse Aide course and it will give you more of an idea of what nurses do. When I took the EMT course, I loved the medical and clinical aspect of it. But when it came time to do my rotations, I realized it wasnt for me. For the 8 hours, we mostly just sat around and did nothing. We got about two calls for the night, but it was just so darn boring. And when we did get a patient I felt kind of frustrated cause we just asssessed her and left her at the hospital, I really wanted to do more hands care and wanted to know how she was doing, but that was beyond our scope of practice. If you want a more laid back job while in nursing school, go for it. You will definatly have lots of down time to study.
hmm ur the first person to have that kind of comment on EMT. ill take it into consideration. i want to work as a ER tech during nursing on the weekends.

dear misslady113 do you know who takes the vouchers from workforce1. i have applied for this grant and i would like to know what schools i could go to with it. i will use the 3800 for the cna and pct so i can get a better paying job. alot of people are talking about manhattan institute do you know if the take it? thanks in advance
Fabou 79. If you go the the website I posted above and put in the borough you want to go to training in, it will give you the list of schools that you can go to. Manhattan Institute isnt part of the list, and they dont accept the grant. In fact, they dont accept any kind of aid, including loans. That's why I didnt go to them cause they just want cash or charge. I am going to New Age Training. Its on the grant list and its a very good school. They have CNA + PCT combined, and offer day or night classes. Its on 35th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. Right in the heart of the city. The choice will be yours, but you have to go to one of the schools on the list, or else you wont be able to get the grant. Good luck.

Did you end up finishing the combined CNA + PCT at New Age? I went through the grant workshop at Workforce 1 today and am trying to figure out which school to apply to.
Thank in advance! Also, do they assist you with finding work after you're certified?
Doni718... Yes I actually did finish my course at New Age. I am now waiting for my certification, which should come this week. And yes they do help you with job placement. They found me a job when I became a CNA and they have some opportunities lined up for me as a PCT. Good luck with your grant. Finish up the research as quickly as you can so you can get it over with. I did my research in one day and the next day went to the school I was interested in. After that give it all to your counselor, wait about 2 to 3 weeks and you should get an approval. Feel free to ask any other questions if you want. :heartbeat
Thanks for the quick reply Misslady. I think they have made it a lot harder to get a grant over the past year, since I haven't worked for over 6 months in the healthcare industry my counselor doesn't think that I'll get the voucher. She said I could try but that's another three weeks of waiting down the drain!
Besides that, it's good to know there's a decent school in NYC. Some of the sites were pretty scary so I think I'll visit New Age. In one of your posts you mentioned that you were going to do the CNA and PCT back to back in eight weeks. Is there a reason you put off going through the PCT until after you worked as a CNA?
I'm planning on doing the 8 week program but maybe you continued your PCT somewhere else?
Thanks again for all this information, it feels like I've been researching this forever and to get some feedback is helpful. :)
