EKG/Phlebotomy Certification help. Where to get and how much?

U.S.A. New York

I am in nursing school. Also enrolled in an EMT-b course right now. Have practical and State test for EMT in about 10 days from now. I was at a career fair at my school and found a hospital down the block (literally like 15 minute walk at most) hires nursing students who have EKG and phlebotomy skills. I have an interview for an EMT job the 24th and will be trying to get another interview next week. I plan to work and save money to take the EKG/Phlebotomy course in the summer and then see about getting a job at that hospital once I get it.

Only problem is I know of only 1 place to get the certification, which I will inquire about next week when I have some free time.

Can anyone recommend me places to get this and about how much it would cost?

Doni718.... It all depends on where you go and how determined you are to insist that you really want the grant. Don't take no for an answer. When I first went my intention was to do CNA\PCT combined. Since I didn't have any healthcare experience at all they told me I would have to do home health aide first, for six months, and then come back and apply for the CNA. I basically told them to go ahead and apply for me to get the CNA alone, and I would do PCT later. They told me I wouldnt get the grant, but I was approved. I then went to apply for PCT after four months of working, and they told me that I had to have at least six months of CNA to be a PCT. Well I persuaded the counselo0r, she put in the app, and I got the grant for PCT.

The center director told me that once workforce approves the grant, the state almost never denies a person. So more than likely, if workforce is even sending your application to the state, it will be approved. I hope you get it, I don't see why you would not. It all depends on who your counselor is and how nice they are I guess. The first counselor I went to wouldn't even see my app unless I did HHA first. I went to a different coulselor and she went ahead and applied for me. Good luck to you and let me know how things go.:heartbeat

Hi Misslady,

Such great advice, thanks for letting me know what you went through to get the grant. After doing some research on when the next classes were starting for numerous schools and how much time I have to spend on taking these classes full time I decided on paying for the CNA myself. I start classes at New Age this next Tuesday! Quick decision... YES :) But it's something that I need to go through to see if this is the right path instead of waiting on it.

As for the PCT, I think I have to wait to be a certified CNA to even take the classes so I'll take the first step now and see how it goes. I'm thinking of applying for a grant for the PCT closer to when I'll be taking the exam and see if I can get it through the city.

I know you mentioned you worked as a CNA for awhile before being able to apply but I'll take my chances. Thanks again for your advice, this whole thing is hard to navigate. :heartbeat

hi Misslady, I know I'm late but you were very informative. I wanted to pick your brain and see if you had any advice for me. I started my RN about 10yrs back but never finished and has been in retail management most of my career. I always wanted to be a nursebut you know retail hours. I now have the chance.BTW I called new age and couldnt get any info from them and found that to be funny. Maybe I can go to them after my CNA. I originally went for LPN but didnt get in. Thats when I decided on the baby step route. Start as a LPN then go back for PCT. By then I can retry the LPN route.

I just registered to Manhattan Institue and will be starting AUG 2. I was gonna go for the Mildred Elley LPN program that just started but decided to wait till they iron out all the kinks. What do you think? Any advice or suggestions? You think I can get a grant to help fund my PCT training after I complete my CNA? Thanks...

sorry typos,,, start off as a CNA then go back for my PCT...

Does anyone know if there is anything like that in Ohio? I am really interested in the same type of thing. I am a CNA and I am in nursing school. But the hospitals around here require an EKG/Phlebotomy Certification to work as a CNA in the hospital.

I am looking to do summer courses with new age training, I will do cna then ekg and plebotomy. Can anyone give me Infomation about the school. How did you like it and did you land a job in hopsital etc?

Thanks in advance

I did the Phlebotomy & EKG couse at the Manhattan Institute in August of 2010, and I still can't find a job. I have been looking all over. I have applied everywhere. I haven't even gotten a call back for an interview. I spent $1,099 on that class and nothing. Now I am looking into doing the CNA course, hopefully I can find a job as a PCT/PCA. I am trying to get into nursing school right now. I'm taking pre-requisite courses for the RN program. Good luck everyone!

Hi, does anyone know of any hospital in the NYC area that is hiring Phlebotomist/EKG techs? I do not have my CNA certification yet, but will be taking the class at Manhattan Institute next week? Any leads would be helpful, thank you.
