I applied to Eisenhower New Grad and JFK memorial Versant programs in the Dessert. Both program start around September. Anyone else here applied? Let's keep each other updated here. I really need a job so I applied to these hospitals though they are 50-60 miles away from me. Anyone knows the pay rate for new grads there? I want to make sure it's worth the drive and gas expense.
Also, if you're working at these hospitals, can you tell us how you like it and any advices you may have...
I have worked at JFK in medical-surgical-telemetry for a little over three years. I have also worked at Eisenhower per diem. Both facilities are great, but for different reasons. At JFK you will find a nice variety of cultures, develop rapport more easily with co-workers, and find a more relaxed learning environment; definitely more of a team approach, an easy place to get started and ease yourself into nursing...plus if you have any interest in L&D, post-partum, NICU, and or pediatrics and plan to be in the desert you should stay at JFK or DRMC (both owned by the same hospital chain by the way) and apply for their Versant programs. orthopedics is also very big at JFK (joint replacements mainly).
As for EMC, if you plan on continuing your nursing education (baccalaureate, masters, doctorate), EMC is currently seeking Magnet status (as is DRMC), which makes it a very attractive place to begin...it is also a beautiful facility with the latest technology. If your interests lie in critical care, cardiovascular- stroke, neurology, oncology it is an excellent hospital.
JFK does not have neuro or oncology.
For trauma unit and critical care, DRMC is your hospital.
At JFK you can expect a starting rate of $31.90...probably the same at DRMC. Not sure what EMC pays their new grads, but I believe it is a little less.
For the most part ypu will find the same docs at both facilities (specifically internal med, nephro, and general surgery).
A nursing professor once told me to "get your experience at the hospital you don't love, then transfer to the place you want to be and get paid as an experienced RN"...well, I have grown to love my co-workers and my patient population I have yet to "transfer".
I am now in graduate school with CSUSB, and love to teach and learn...if you find yourselves at JFK I am in "the tower". Feel free to ask questions!
Yay!!! Many congrats to you :) I assume you got L&D? Which hospital?
It's actually med-surg, but at least its close to home. I can transfer to L&D in a few years.. :) I think its all about getting your foot in the door these days.. Looking forward to finally getting a chance to be a nurse though. Good luck to everyone. It will happen.
So did you ladies end up getting an offer? I also interviewed at JFK and got the notice today that another candidate was selected. This is getting pretty discouraging, but I'm trying to keep thinking it just wasn't meant to be. :::::::::::::::positive thoughts positive thoughts!::::::::::::::::::::

I have an interview in ED at JFK on Friday. I will be going to an interview on Thurs for a school nurse, driving down from Oakland, spending the night in Pasedena, going to the interview on Fri and then driving back. Anyone else need a ride from the Bay Area? It is an insanely boring long drive.
