Thanks DesertRN! At these two prisons, is there more than one RN on the night shift? Do they provide decent training for a new nurse? Is this night shift best for a new nurse (slower)? I appreciate your help. Thanks!

bump... Is it easier to start on the night shift? Is it slower? Like a 22:00 - 0600 ? Do you actually pass meds at these hours? Most importantly, is there more than one nurse in a prison with 3,500 inmates during the night shift? How many nurses are there?

Bump. Is it safe to work at Ironwood or Chuckwalla as an RN? Have there been any nurse hostage or other safety issues for RN's at these two prisons? Are you always accompanied by two "armed" guards (by armed I mean batons). Do you wear a prison issued set of medical scrubs or your own scrubs? Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for all of your messages! I found out which registry they use and filled out an application with them. They called me and said that you need at least one year of nursing experience to work for the registry. Bummer!

Thank you all for your responses. I was under the impression that you still needed many volunteers. For now, I will send a donation through the Red Cross. There are still over 400 missing, which is heartbreaking. I'll be thinking of those in the affected states.

Hi, Thanks for your response. I would like to volunteer in Tuscaloosa actually. I have a new graduate RN friend who speaks fluent Spanish. If they will allow an out of state license, perhaps we can get out there. What a terrible disaster. I would really like to help.

Hello, I graduated from nursing school this past December and got my RN in February. I also got my ACLS this month. I haven't been able to find a job yet in California. I'm just sitting around with plenty of time on my hands. I would love to go out to Alabama and volunteer as an RN while helping the storm victims. Would I be able to volunteer as an RN? Would they even have any use for a new grad RN, or do they typically require "experienced" RN's? As long as I'm doing something to help people. I heard that you need to find an organization to "sponsor" you. I'm not even sure where to start looking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello~ I applied for a position at several S. California prisons 4 months ago. I received a 75% on the experience questionare being that I am a new graduate RN. Is there any chance for me to get into corrections as a new graduate nurse? I even applied to a very isolated prison out in the desert. In fact, that prison is my top choice. No response from them.... There are zero positions for new grads in the isolated part of California that I live in. Every hospital requires one year of experience - minimum. There are only newgrad programs which pop up here and there, which only take 10 people at a time. Over 600 apply. I have yet to land a position in one of these programs. I really thought my top choice of working in corrections would be an advantage and that I would actually land a job. I can't even get an interview. So, my questions are 1. Is there any chance for me to work in corrections as a new grad? (and don't tell me to start out in MedSurg because it's not even an option - haha. I couldn't even if I wanted to. No jobs...) 2. Are there any certifications I should obtain while waiting for my opportunity? I recently obtained BLS and ACLS. 3. What else should I do? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm sure you've heard the struggles of the RN new grads finding jobs. All we do is complain that we can't find a job =)~ Thank you!!

update, my tour of the california prison is scheduled for next week. i'm looking forward to it because i should come out of there knowing if this type of job is for me. a nurse is providing the tour. you have to fill out a clearance form and are cleared in order to take a tour. contact the pio and they will e-mail it to you and you can either scan and send it back or mail it in. i'll update my thoughts after the tour.

I am a new graduate RN with ADN. I specifically want to work in corrections and have submit a resume 3 weeks ago. I also took the online exam and got a 75%. I never received a response from the DOC. I also was unable to find out what rank I am. I have never received anything in the mail. I have been applying through changingprisonhealthcare.org for CA prisons. Is this where everyone else is applying? Do they prefer a BSN? Do I have a chance as a new grad with ADN? My GPA is good. Thank you
