Anyone work at San Quentin Prison?
I wouldnt work in SQ as your first job in corrections...very heavy duty gangs etc. The place is huge very old drafty and windy. They pay more since no one wants to work there! You have to apply on line, its the only way they accept apps. The whole system is screwed up since they were taken over by the Feds since CA was doing such a lousey job. Good benefits tho if youre into it. Start maybe with CMF and trnsfer with some eperience. (fewer gangs)

New Grad RN applying to Folsom Prison, Ca... insight please
1. Don't call it NorCal or Frisco. 2. Each facility is VERY different. 3. Nurses make $7050/mo plus bonus if you qualify 4.Overtime in CA is 1.5 after 8 hours and double after 12 hours 5. They have hired so many nurses overtime has been cut way back. 6. its run in a military format and can be very unpleasant 7. Few nurses are native English speakers and really resent haveing to speak English when you are around. They also resent their overtime being taken away by all the hires so they too can be VERY unwelcoming. 8. The money isnt worth it. 9. Folsom is VERY old and has many many gang issues and violence.

LPN to RN through testing?
Oh come on, if an LVN wants to be an RN, go to school and become one. If an RN wants to be an NP, get the necessary education and degrees. A test of any kind is just a small part of what is necessary. A person has to learn to THINK like an RN, not just know what box to check on the test. Its hard to explain...

CONTINUED IN WHAT IS THE MAJOR REASON Why are they all leaving?
Part of the problem is the other nurses too...I was on a unit at UC San Francisco and was told by other nurses "nurse on this unit care enough our patients we dont have TIME to take a breaK"...meaning if I did, I would be thought of as uncaring...so I left there anyway. Other places I have been the same thing has been implied. Been a nurse for 12 years, quite enough thank you in Med Surg. going to try corrections on a state level...at least they insist on proper breaks, educational ops etc. We shall see....

What if CNA won't work?
First, try not to work in the same facility in which you were a CNA. Its a very difficult transition to get them to accpet your authority. And YES it falls on you for any poor care being given. Long term care is known for these problems. Just pray they dont have a union, then its really impossible.

Direct Entry Programs Applications in; what happens next?
Be careful with direct entry MSN you come out with alot of knowledge but no real intro to nurisng culture...and little clinical experience. When you say you have an MSN, there alot of high expectations about your knowledge that frequently aqrent supported. If I had it to over I wouldnt do direct entry.

LPN to RN through testing?
Letting an LVN only test to be an RN is like learning to ride a bike reading a book...doesnt work

Susanville, CA prison question?
The web site info is hard and sketch to understand? Can't even understand your question! CA corrections is complicated because they were just taken over by the Feds. All the benifits are on line. No social securty taken out...and medical staff are getting a salary increase at the end of the year. The test for RN is taken on line, so go on line and check the whole thing out as much as you can. Getting someone on the phone to explain it all is impossible.

California Corrections
Getting hired by CA corrections is a challenge...so many layers of bureaucracy to deal with. I hear they are discontinuing MTAs and hiring LVNs. But they are hiring lots of RN's..they were taken over by the Feds the end of last year since healthcare was in such bad shape...they are working on it but there are lots of on going changes. It depends too on what particular position and what facility you want to work at...they advertise a position but apparently already have lists of people who have already interviewed and are ready to be hired. Its complicated..takes alot of time and figuring things out...RNs are in a much better situation

NCSBN rules out Philippines as NCLEX site
Well, I am sure it will cause more disussion but this seems to be yet another problem with foreign trained nurses..my issue is with language barriers...they say they have to speak acceptable English but I find it generally to be very limited and dangerous in pratice. Many foreign nurses then insist on speaking their language amongst themselves on the floor, really alienting staff and patients. Dont know the solution, but when I interview for a position and see alot of foreign nurses on the floor I head the other way. Recruiters say hospitals LOVE them because they work all kinds of hours and dont care about unions and overtiem. They are weakening the negotiating power of our own nurses. I hope someone wakes up soon.

What is the major reason nurses leave?
YUP, all of the above. I'm just so tired of it...I thought it was me for a long time till I found this site!

LPN to RN through testing?
Maybe RN's should take a test and be an MD?

CONTINUED IN WHAT IS THE MAJOR REASON Why are they all leaving?
Why I want to quit? All of the above...all the responsibility and no authority to improve the situation. Managers, I think are the main reason...and hospitals that fire the CNA's because of the staffing limits required by law in CA. So I have fewer pts but now have to do the baths and showers! Its idiotic to keep doing it with the responsibility involved. I would never tell my daughter to be a nurse.
