*Easy* things I just hate doing

Published

I am venting my pet peeves. I had one of each of these yesterday, 1 patient w/ 3 of these. Share with me yours.

I hate:

1. Giving enemas - I have never not caused a huge mess even before I get the solution INTO the patient.

2. Taking accuchecks - The accucheck needs a calibration or quality check, or has the wrong code card for the strips, or I don't stick the patient hard enough so there's not enough blood and then have to go run for another finger stick thingie because the second one I grabbed is faulty

3. Sitz bath - see #1

4. Simply having a patient in isolation - putting on and taking off the PPE can suck your time, and if the patient has the temp in their room up I get all hot and sweaty within 5 minutes

5. Putting in a foley - this is never as easy as it should be. Either the A&O patient is unhelpful "Please keep your knees up and apart Ms X" or the anatomy is unhelpful.

Chest percussions (nurses do this in home health) and it. Seems to take. Forever. But then I feel guilty for hating it because it really does help the patient to clear secretions.:-/

Burping and or emptying colostomy bags - I have to wear a mask otherwise I'm gagging at the bedside. Sorry folks, it's just how it is.

I never liked putting Ted stockings on a patient, getting them over the ankle, you can work up a sweat!

See I like doing this, I enjoy the interaction with the patient & I feel like I'm doing something to really help them. Many times in nursing, I don't feel like I'm doing anything useful.

Maybe I should have been a physiotherapist/Physical therapist instead!

i used to hate doing neuro checks, until i caught a non-reactive pupil.

after that, it made the tedium, more meaningful...

unlike others, who just check off the boxes w/o actually assessing. (grrrr.)

Leslie can't believe some nurses check off neuro obs without assessing people properly! Did u catch someone doing this?

I caught a nurse once who used to 'guess' BPs. She used to look at the last one & round it up or down a bit! When I asked her she said she'd never really been taught properly in nursing school. I couldn't believe it so educated her & she was so grateful after that. I asked why didn't she go thru it with the instructors & she said she was too scared to ask cos she felt like an idiot.

Makes u wonder doesn't it...

I hate feeding too! Easy, but I sit there thinking about the million other things that need to be done

Feeding is one of my favorite things to do! Unfortunately, as RN's, there isn't mush opportunity to do it. I always look at it as a chance to relax and make my patient or resident happy with some one-on-one time.

Mine is really stupid. I hate doing I&O. It's so easy and so important, but I love that the aides do it and hate in when I have to.

PCA pumps....in theory they are supposed to make my life easier but I detest filling out the stupid paperwork and figuring out the pump. I would rather go in q3hours and give it IVP!

Mine are all things that have probably been listed... nothing is difficult, just tasks I don't care for.

Considering most of the patients on my unit are on isolation, I hate it as well.

I have to say, giving meds it becoming more annoying each day, LOL! While I believe its important that a nurse gives the medication since they have the education and judgement to know when to hold or have something adjusted/changed when needed, I just find the physical task of passing them to be annoying. Mostly because of the handheld scanners we are required to use for med administration. Those things add an extra 10 mins to give each of my patient's their meds.
