Hello fellow nurses!
I was wondering if anyone applied for Duke University's online FNP program, Fall 2014. For those that are currently attending, how long did it take to hear back from admissions?
Also, would you mind sharing info on the program? For example, numbers of hours put in weekly for part-time attendance. I realize this may vary on the particular student, but an idea will be helpful.
Thank you kindly!
Jayne
p.s. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
I will be there Thursday and Friday. Does anyone have any idea of what the interview is like? What about class size? It looks like about 100 people will be interviewing, however this is for full time, part time, on campus, online, and BSN - DNP program, so that number doesnt mean much I guess.
Currently on a packed flight to Durham from my connecting at Salt Lake City. I am so excited to explore the campus and area on my own tomorrow. I rented a car and everything. Anyone here local and have any suggestions? I looked up some places based on Yelp suggestions on the Durham suggestions, but sometimes a local perspective is better.
Looks like I'm just going to miss you then Jon. The questions you have are good questions to ask during the interview. Would you like me to ask, if time permits? I will try and share how my interview goes, given if it is appropriate to share. I am sure our interviews will vary as we may differ faculty interviewers and they may bring up different parts of our application (i.e. personal statement, resume, portfolio, etc). The faculty I am interviewing with is impressive and an alum so I will definitely have questions for her about her perspective as a former student.
Like any interview, I would go over basic interview questions (strengths and weakness) and be prepared to be asked anything about your academic and professional experiences. It is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine what they will exactly ask in a 30-minute interview. They also should leave the last five to ten minutes to allow questions from you, but I really think they will try their best to stick to the time limit as there is no time in between interviewees. Best of luck to you all this week. So excited!
I'm not a local but know the area well from family. Check out Geer St Garden for some tasty southern food. Get the hush puppies. I would love to hear how your interview. Good luck! I would really like to hear about the facility tour vs campus tour. Hope you packed for cold weather. Looks like snow tonight.
Thanks Jon, hush puppies it is. Went on-campus today and checked out some school gear. I loved seeing the campus, it was so surreal. Yes, I've been watching the local news and the snow tonight is all over it. No worries, I packed accordingly. I may be from So Cal, but I grew up in Chicago so this weather will be refreshing for me. Will keep you all posted after tomorrow.
Hi Everyone,
So I learned some helpful info after today's interview. The curriculum is under review and for those that are distance-based, looks like more campus visits along with a few more clinical hours and class credits are under way. My interviewer said that it will be more defined by the summer, so we will know of the matriculation plan by the time we register for classes upon acceptance. My interview was not bad at all. My faculty interviewer was very professional and straight-forward. My questions were geared towards elaborating on my application materials, i.e. clinical experience and academic history. Also had to explain my future plans with the FNP and DNP since I applied as a post-BSN to DNP. Otherwise, give an understanding of the role of a NP and the reasons for your desire to become a NP. In summary, it was a very insightful interview.
Looks like the Admissions Committee will be meeting on February 17th and email notifications should be sent by Friday, February 21st. The next three weeks will be gut-wrenching, but I am glad we will not have to wait until March. Good luck to all of you and if you are going to the on-campus interview, take advantage of the tours and take it all in as it goes because this is a blessed opportunity. Talk to you all soon.
Regards,
Tom
P.S. Jon, I tried some chicken and waffles at Dame's (per recommendation of Ernie Rushing [campus and facilites tour guide and admissions officer]) and it was amazing! Good luck buddy.
Hello All!
I interviewed last night (1/23). I drove up to Duke - which is about 2.5 hours from my home - and drove back the same day. Sadly, I missed the bus tours...all I have seen of the campus is Trent drive and the nursing building. I thought my interview went well! I went a LOT over my allotted time and I am worried about being penalized for that. I was caught off guard by some of the behavioral based interview questions. Luckily I have switched jobs recently and interviewed recently; it is certainly a skill to keep fresh! Overall the faculty member that I interviewed with was kind, funny, and full of good information. They reviewed the potential changes to the MSN curriculum with me and answered all of my questions.
Now that the interview is over I am trying to focus on work, or really anything other than the wait! I hope everyone else had a good experience as well. :-)

I agree with lancermav. I can't imagine that everyone will be able to accept an interview because, well, life happens. Keep checking and let us know!
