Duke University's online FNP program, Fall 2014

Published

Hello fellow nurses!

I was wondering if anyone applied for Duke University's online FNP program, Fall 2014. For those that are currently attending, how long did it take to hear back from admissions?

Also, would you mind sharing info on the program? For example, numbers of hours put in weekly for part-time attendance. I realize this may vary on the particular student, but an idea will be helpful.

Thank you kindly!

Jayne

p.s. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Is the new curriculum the same? Different classes, more campus visits? Is the program still the same length for online students (6 semesters?) Thanks!

The new curriculum is definitely not the same. It is the same length as before; 6 semesters, being fall, spring, and summer, times two. As already mentioned here, there will be more campus visits, because they are going to incorporate more visits, or "intensives," with each clinical rotation, such as at least one visit for each --primary care management, geriatric management, pediatric management, and OB/reproductive health management. For the FNP capstone, I am not clear if that will require a campus visit, but I would not rule it out.

As far as didactic goes, or the classes, there is some variance with the new curriculum and the old sample MAT available online as we were applying. Some of the changes I noticed from the old curriculum that are not on this new one are Research Methods, Applied Statistics, Health Services Program Planning and Outcomes Analysis, Research Utilization, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, no longer exist. With the new curriculum plan, however, there are additional courses that were not on the old curriculum. Some of these changes I noticed were:

- the core courses Scholarship 1, Scholarship 2, Professional Roles for Advanced Practice (maybe this has all the aforementioned classes from the old curriculum that are not in this new one?)

- with the "Four Ps," there is now Advanced Physiology included

- Primary Care Management has a didactic portion before the clinical portion (I think this replaces Managing Common Acute and Chronic Health Problems I and II)

- there is now a Geriatric Management clinical course

- also important to note that all the other clinical courses has its own didactic and clinical component concurrently taken with each

- finally, required 3 credits of electives

There are is also course sequencing, such as Scholarship I to be taken before Scholarship II, Physio to be taken before Pathophysio, Physio and Pathophysio to be taken before Physical Assessment and Pharmacology, Primary Care didactic before Primary Care clinical, and Primary Care to be taken before taking Geriatric, OB and Peds.

I understand after reading this, that it may sound confusing, but looking at the handout given at the interview is not as confusing. If I could, I would attach images of the the drafted FNP Curriculum Revision Highlights, but I am not sure if I can since it is only a draft. Hopefully, I did not overstep my boundaries for explaining in length the noticeable changes between the new drafted curriculum and the old one available online. Hope this helps though.

Still hoping for some good news. Work is definitely keeping me busy enough to keep my mind off all this waiting. Hope you are all fairing well and still "taking slow deep breaths in and slowly out," as I like to tell my patients. As usual, best of luck everyone.

Thanks so much - that's really helpful! If anything it makes me even more excited about Duke because it sounds like they are really committed to ensuring a high quality program by doing a complete revision like this. Hoping for good news soon!

Seriously. Checking that email every hour.

I thought I was the only one checking email every hour. 9 more days!

Am I the only person on allnurses who gets email sent direct to my phone?? Lol

No. I do too. Via two apps.

I don't! Which apps?

For my iPhone, tapatalk and allnurses.com

I meant email, on android I just have my email synced with my phone and my emails cause my phone to alert instantly just like a text message.

All of these posts made me think that someone had heard something.
