Hi ya'll, I know that most of you guys are already in the application process. If you've also applied to UNC Chapel Hill, I strongly advise you to choose UNC over Duke. Duke is a brand, but the environment here is not worth the prestige. UNC will bestow you with the prestige AND an amazing environment. Trust me, I wish I had chosen UNC over Duke's program.

Can you explain why the environment is not good?

Has anyone had any communication with admissions at all?

Nope, decisions go out some time in March.

Got into Univ of Miami program. It's unfortunate we find out so late it's going to be hard to switch gears.

Congrats on your acceptance!

I agree. It doesn’t get easier when you’re fortunate enough to be holding another program’s acceptance for a fraction of Duke’s price.

I wonder what the record is for the LEAST amount an incoming ABSN student had to pay themselves (after any need-based aid and/or scholarships were factored in)?

As much as I would pick Duke first among all the programs I applied for, cost is a big concern of mine (still with loans looming from my Masters at a pricey Ivy). Thus, this state school acceptance of mine for around ~10K (that will essentially give me the same degree/the same ultimate job) is shaping up too hard to pass up. ??

I 100% agree. Duke has that reputation but they certainly make you pay for it. The nurses I know say it doesn't really matter where you go. Having said that you probably want to go somewhere the NCLEX pass rate is above 90% because that shows it's a legitimate program and develops RNs. It's going to be a tough decision because Miami is 12 months for 40K as opposed to Duke that's 15 months at 90k. But it's Duke....

Well, the nclex passing rate for Columbia is 88%. Does that mean it’s a not a legitimate program then?

Is anyone considering going to another school even if you get into Duke? The price is just kind of extreme and I know that other schools are just as good. I just don't think that Duke will offer that much in scholarships...

It is also unfortunate that they are sending out acceptances so late because many of us have to make a decision now. I feel very conflicted

I would say no, that's really bad. Definitely not a selling point for them. Just because it's Columbia doesn't mean their program is top notch. It's not listed in the top 50 ABSN programs so they probably don't take accelerated nursing very seriously. A high NCLEX pass rate is a direct statistic to how well the school prepared students to be an RN.

My friend is currently in the Columbia MDE program. She says she regrets choosing Columbia and the program is really disorganized.
