He is not a doctor, as in physician. He is a PA, The ASSISTANT (EXTENDER) of the physician. He is also a rude *******!

I would be upset too. PAs need someone to pick on, because they don't get respect from doctors either...

I am not easily offended and l let things roll off my back. The P.A. was making rounds the other day and walked into one of my patients room. I heard the patient ask, "A nurse came into my room at 3a.m. and put something in my IV. I have no idea what it was." The P.A. came out of the room and asked me what it was. I told him I was not sure, but I would find out and let him know. I followed that up with, I'm sure it was important if it was 3a.m. He smiled and thanked me, and walked back into the patients room. I heard him say, "you know, Nurses are stupid. They think if they are awake at 3 a.m. then you should be too." It was probably a flush to make sure the IV is still working. Anyhow, I'll find out fore sure." My mouth hit the floor. At that very moment, I remembered in report the nurse tell me the pt had a Bigeminy rhythm and he was given IV Mag, which corrected it. I quickly walked into the patients room and explained to the pt and P.A. what was given and why. The P.A. responded with a great big smile on his face, "See, I knew we would find out!" I still get pissed every time I think about it. I am a very quiet, non-confrontational person, but let me tell you....I can spit out a sarcastic comment that will make your head spin when I feel the need. I am feeling the need!

This behavior is unacceptable for two reasons. One, it is showing a lack of respect for colleagues. Two, it jeopardizes the confidence patients have in their nurses. This patient was either completely put off by how much of a jerk this guy is or became extremely worried at the thought of "stupid nurses" caring for him/her.

Report this PA for disruptive behavior. It'll behoove management to do something about it since he said something to a PATIENT!

He meant that nurses are "stupid hot." Hey-yoooooooh!:lol2:

I work with Surgeons all the time and some can be notorious for their negative / sarcastic remarks about staff. There's 2 ways to respond in my opinion..

What "TheCommuter" suggested..

In a playful but call them out on their behavior type of way..

or pull them to the side and let them know their comment/behavior is not appreciated and UNACCEPTABLE. (Especially since it was said in front of a patient)

You need to let it be known that you overheard it and that it is not acceptable. People act this way because they get away with it. Any respectable professional that is worthy of being respected will respect your efforts and intentions. I remind myself this when face with these type of challenges.

Every action which is the result of an emotion stems from either love or fear. If we remember that, we will understand the reason for other's behavior.

He must sorely lack confidence in himself, if he feels the need to undermine others on the care team like that.

Here.I.Stand hit the nail on the head right out of the gate. An attempt at putting others down in order for one to feel better about themselves is clearly a sign of low self-esteem.

In order for one to elevate their self-esteem, it is done through introspection and a change of consciousness. Neither are usually gained through negative confrontation. We don't possess the power to change another.

I'm reading this, and thinking this guy is undoubtedly an obnoxious jerk, his remark makes no sense to me. Did anyone wake HIM up at 3am? Does he find the idea of a 24/7 workforce perplexing, and decide all the people there at 3am are actually there because they enjoy waking people up?

Did the patient complain about being woken up or wonder what medication was added to her IV at 3am? (thought it was the latter) Was the comment an unfunny attempt to lighten the patient's mood? Did HE review the chart at any point, where he would've discovered the pertinent info all by himself? Sigh.....I better go before my head explodes.

1. he's not a doctor

2. maybe he is threatened because NPs basically do the same role as a PA

3. he is an idiot

- also I don't care if it's 3am and you're not critical I'm going into your room and flashing a bright light in your face to see if you're alive. My career depends on it

New poster. One post. Hasn't come back. I'm getting a little suspicious that we're being punked by someone from SDN.

I find it very interesting that at the same time the PA is being chastised for belittling nurses, nurses are belittling his credentials.

Obviously the PA was out of line, and I feel he should be directly confronted with it (in a professional manner): pull him aside, say "I heard what you aid in there about nurses being stupid and I feel like we should have a discussion about that". I am willing to be he would get really apologetic and probably feel pretty regretful in retrospect, and maybe, he would think twice before doing that again.

Posting here undermining his education/role is doing exactly what he did and it does nothing but show a vengeful attitude towards a teammate.

I can only speak for myself but I would get an attorney and file a hostile work environment lawsuit. I may not win but I can drag his name through the mud and out him publicly for it.
