Hello,
Looking for anyone else who has been accepted to the 1 year program (15 month) at SUNY Downstate. Entering June 3rd 2010 :).
chaya, your replies and suggestions have been wonderful (as usual)!
aww, thanks!
yeah, check out both styles before you order. i just hate anything that zips up the back, so awkward. and the female tops are horrible on some body types.i would just like to add, that two of my clinical professors did have a problem with me wearing a white scrub top, even with the downstate patch sewed on. so getting at least one uniform top might be a good idea. female or male top, i guess that it depends on a person. i would still choose the female one, even though a patient last week though i was a catholic “sister”…
do not dare get the school's pants! they look horrible, tapered at the bottom and absolutely shapeless. any pair of white scrub bottoms will be just fine...
lol! yeah, the gauze and the tape came in handy for some of my kids' booboos. but fortunately none of them needed any foleys or iv's!!!and finally, no matter what they tell you do not get the *******’ tote, especially if you are on a budget! i opened it for the first time a month ago, when i needed gauze to clean my puppy’s ears…
Hi! I just found got accepted to the ABSN last week which is really really late. I was wondering if anyone know how strict are they with deadlines, because I don't graduate from my undergrad until May 21st and apparently they need proof of BS by the 28th. Does that also affect my ability to register for courses since registration starts next week.
ChayaN,
I've been accepted to Downstate Accelerated program for Summer/2010, and I have a few questions to ask you - I saw some of your posts, and I also saw other students' negative posts, and I'm now very nervous. Let me know if (and how) to communicate with you via e-mail (if you have time to answer my questions, of course).

Tanguera,
I've been accepted to the Accelerated program for the Summer/2010. I read some of your posts; now I'm a bit nervous about the program. I saw that in the beginning it was tough for you. Now that you're almost done, how can you compare your recent experiences to the earlier ones? Has it improved for you? I haven't actively used this website so I don't know how it works. Is it possible to e-mail someone without other people reading my e-mails?
Best,
Artistmom

Artist, I think you need to have at least 15 posts to send private messages. But I'll be happy to send you an email through the link provided; I'll see if that works.
Welcome class of 2011. I am currently in the class of 2010. I am selling several books at a reasonable price. please email me [email protected] if interested. If you guys were informed to buy the newer edition of any of the textbooks we had to purchase, I suggest to stick with the older edition. Most of our classmates purchased the older edition and it was fine. I can also help with any questions.

Hi Artistmom,
So sorry I haven't written earlier. I've been behind with e-mails and I was out of town for almost two weeks.
I did have plenty of issues with the program when I began and I still am not satisfied with the program. I wanted to post the realities of Downstate since I really didn't know much about Downstate before I entered the program, only that it was the cheapest program out there. I wanted to write and let prospective students make an informed decision.
So if you are certain that you will be coming to Downstate, don't be nervous, just be prepared. Have all of your books and materials (steth, BP cuff, uniform, penlight) ready for the summer and make sure to just keep on reading. I am sure that there are others who are hesitant to begin Downstate's program because of the negativity surrounding it, but if you're already chosen to come to Downstate, then just be prepared to read a lot on your own and don't wait for professors to assign chapters to read (esp in Med Surg).
let me know if you have any other specific questions. I'll try to answer quickly next time!!
Tanguera,
thank you for your post. After weeks of deliberation, I have decided to give up my seat at Downstate and attend Stony Brook instead (I was accepted into SB 2-year BSN program beginning September/2010). Since SB is a SUNY school also, it costs the same as Downstate and is just as affordable.
I realized that to be in an accelerated program, I would have to completely neglect my family and my three children for 15 months. I know of a few people who are able to balance both school and family and thrive; I am not one of them. Besides, at SB I will be able to work during the summers of 2010 and 2011, saving money for school.
Good luck with finishing your studies. It must be very gratifying to finally see the light at the end of a tunnel!
Best,
Artistmom
