Downstate Accelerated/Class of 2011

Published

Hello,

Looking for anyone else who has been accepted to the 1 year program (15 month) at SUNY Downstate. Entering June 3rd 2010 :).

I, too, am very curious to know how Downstate class of 2011 is doing so far since they just finished their first summer session.

I've spoken to many students from the Class of 2011 and they've had many of the same problems with administration and professors that I had when I first started school at Downstate. I'd like to see them share their thoughts here also.

Hi all!

I was accepted to the ABSN program starting this summer and am eager for any and all information I can get. I have also read some of the negative stuff online about the program but would love a few more perspectives. Any current students willing to share, especially anyone who has something good to say :)?

I'm also curious about where current students live (like what are good neighborhoods near the school) and what the rents are like for students who live off campus but near Downstate.

Anyway, I'm gonna keep a positive outlook for now- congrats to everyone who got in! Hopefully we'll meet in a few months! Good luck to those still applying.

Hi,

I know you posted this several months ago, but I was hoping for some insight. I'm currently hold a BS in health care administration from Oregon state university and am working on my prereqs at BMCC. Do you have any advice or helpful hints? From what I understand, all ABSN programs are competitive and my undergrad GPA is 2.85 and know that I have to get 4.0 in my prereqs to even be considered.

Thanks for your help & goodluck!

Hi all,

I will be a student in downstate this summer and would like to know what does the nursing tote bag consist of and is it fine just to purchase one uniform top?

Thank you.

The tote consists of a whole bunch of stuff that YOU WILL NOT USE. Dont buy it! Just get one nursing top and white pants you can get anywhere else.

thank you for the information. would you know which books are required for the courses in the accelerated nursing program?

Hi,

does anyone know what type of white nurse shoes are required at Downstate or could I just wear any all white shoes or sneakers?

Thanks.

Definitely only buy one top. The men's version zips in front rather than the back and IMO looks better and is more comfortable.

Never say never! A couple weeks ago my husband needed an ace bandage and I found one in my handy-dandy nursing tote (pretty expensive for an ace bandage though!)

What you'll find in it are a foley kit, a suction kit, assorted bandages and wound care equipment, IV tubing, a full set of PPE, some alcohol preps, etc. While you will not need it for clinicals per se, you may find it useful to play around with the kits so you get familiar with the equipment and practice your skills. (Mind you, most of my kit is still untouched.)

Hi Jeanette73,

Is it ok to buy the men's uniform top? and what does IMO stand for?

Thanks.

Hi Jeanette73,

Is it ok to buy the men's uniform top?

Thanks.

Yes, some women did buy the men's top. The ones who did tended to be big chested and the women's top is a very tight fit. It also zippers down the back, as I mentioned, while the men's zippers down the front. Personally I found the women's top quite dorky looking.

Hi Jeanette73,

I went to the university book store and the women's uniform this year is different. The women's uniform has the zipper in front and not too bad looking, I guess.

Thanks for all your help and information. Now to look for books from last year like you suggested for some of the classes.

It really is appreciated that you are willing to share your wisdom.
