Hello,

Looking for anyone else who has been accepted to the 1 year program (15 month) at SUNY Downstate. Entering June 3rd 2010 :).

Hey Penbare! I just got my acceptance letter yesterday! Congrats to you and I will see you in a few months!! :D

Welcome! I'm in the current Downstate class. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Chaya, Do you know how to private message? I would love to pick your brain a bit......not sure how to PM though

You have to have a minimum number of posts before you can PM... not sure how many it is. I'll try sending you a PM and see if it goes through.

ChayaN,

Thanks for sending some info, however, I am not allowed to reply.

I have read several people on this forum speak their minds about Downstate....and not quite the best. That said, I have read that about all the programs in the area. Any tips you want to write here openly? I am sure there are many more people who would love to know as well.....if not, feel free to send me your email address and maybe we can exchange information that way (if you want).

Thanks again for introducing yourself!!

thanks and same to you!

Hey ChayaN thanks for the welcome :).. I actually had a really important question.. I live on the Bronx/Yonkers border and it would take me a little less than 2 hours commute one way each day.. my parents want me to board over there but to be honest I don't want to.. how are the schedules for classes every day like earliest times and days and what not.. i would love to hear back from you.. thanks in advance!

All I can say is that your experience is what you make of it... I'll PM you my email address if you want more detailed communication. Be prepared for a grueling summer semester, and after that things will ease up a lot in the fall and spring.

Nyxbabygirl, the commute does sound tough. As far as class goes, usually they start at 9am and people tend to drift in as late as 10. But clinicals can start as early as 7:30am and you must be on time for that. All clinical sites are in Brooklyn, within a few miles radius of Downstate.

Hi all!

I was accepted to the ABSN program starting this summer and am eager for any and all information I can get. I have also read some of the negative stuff online about the program but would love a few more perspectives. Any current students willing to share, especially anyone who has something good to say :)?

I'm also curious about where current students live (like what are good neighborhoods near the school) and what the rents are like for students who live off campus but near Downstate.

Anyway, I'm gonna keep a positive outlook for now- congrats to everyone who got in! Hopefully we'll meet in a few months! Good luck to those still applying.

If you want to know the good news, here it is.

Since it's accelerated and state funded, you can get your nursing license in a relatively short time with relatively little debt.

Although it's not a top program, it is highly selective because it is cheaper than most other programs. That means that your classmates will, for the most part, be very motivated, high caliber students. Seriously, my classmates are one of the best things about this program.

As for everything else... well, I've said this before in other threads and I'll say it again. If you walk in there thinking that they will teach you everything you need to know to be a nurse, you will be very disappointed. Look at it as a basically self-taught program that will facilitate your getting a degree, but the real work of learning to be a nurse is on your shoulders. Don't rely on your clinical instructors to provide you with the necessary experience. YOU will have to set up for yourself the type of learning experiences you want. You need to be very proactive if you want to hone your skills as a nurse.

Good morning,

Does anyone know anything about placing out of classes? I am taking a pathophysiology class right now and read somewhere on here that you can place out of the class at Downstate. I am wondering if that is a test or if they just look at your transcript?

Anyone know about this?

My understanding is that you can place out of anything but the actual nursing classes. You need to show a transcript and they will determine if the courses are equivalent. It is highly recommended that you place out of any classes you can, especially the first summer when the schedule is really grueling and practically impossible to absorb everything in such a short time.
