Double Masectomy Unnecessary!

Did any of you happen to see "The Today Show" this morning? They did an interview with a woman, and of course her lawyer, who had a double masectomy because she was told she had breast cancer. Then after the operation the doctor came in and told her they were wrong. She never had breast cancer. They had mixed up her lab results with another womans.

I guess the lawyer said that two doctors and a lab tech all failed to see that the name on the lab results and ID # did not match the patients name and ID #.

This is not a surprising thing to happen. However, a mistake, a HUGE one was made. Yes, I'm sure she is glad that she doesn't have CA, but it's hard to be completely "happy" with that when you have needlessly had both breasts removed. I am of the thought that IF $250, 000 will not cover her expenses then she should get more.

In that case, a man who undergoes a bil. orchiectomy for test. CA, and then is told, "Oops, you don't have cancer...nevermind", should be glad he doesn't have CA...and his wife should be happy, too.

IMHO - Fire the doctor and anyone else that was responsible for the error, revoke licenses and certifications and make sure they NEVER work in health care again. I am tired of listening to the blues. The insurance rates go up everytime some butcher screws up and amputates the wrong leg, or the insurance company is notified about the physician's cocaine addiction or the latest DUI charge.

Sorry, just needed to vent, climbing down off my soap box now.

You know what's really scary about this whole thing is the fact that this probably happens a whole lot more than we know. I feel bad for both of these women. The damage is done.

This woman doesn't live far from me. Terrible..... I would like to know how this other woman is doing though. They just said that they contacted her and treated her.

Hmm....do you think they will take those charges off of her bill and treat her for free? Maybe reconstruct her breasts for free. I know it's not the same, but at least it's something.

On the news tonight, they said that her attorney is pro bono...was so sickened by what happened (aka camera time...:().

I also want to know what they are doing to the doctors and pathologists responsible for this....prob a slap on the wrist....

What ABOUT the woman who actually HAD the cancer & ended up putting off treatment as SHE was not diagnosed? Did they cover this on the show? What a horrible story...

Good point.

I don't agree that this is a parallel comparison. Breasts are not reproductive organs and do not effect the ability to have a child. This would only be the same if she had a total hyst.

And yes, I still think they should be happy they don't have cancer. I think we're forgetting the big picture: a life without breasts, or a life? Millions of women make this very decision all the time.

This woman should be compensated for all medical expenses related to the surgery and any post-op complications, and perhaps reconstruction if she wishes. But I would not compensate her on the basis that she was traumatized because she was told that she is really cancer free. I don't see any trauma there. A few months ago she was given a death sentence so to speak, and now she's healthy. I feel that that is compensation enough.

Ok on that note : Its the principal of the matter: But your correct IT WOULD BE LIKE HAVING YOUR member REMOVED!!!!!!

Since your member isnt a member of the necessary organ to create a child its just a delivery system. Like Breasts just feed the infant but not necessary for child birth. The member is just an delivery system for sperm the testicles are the only needed sex organ.

Hows your member today ???

How about whoops, but its ok You dont have cancer...

Zoe, now you're being weird. Your member is indeed a needed reproductive organ. You know this. And I still don't think breasts can be compared to a testicle or member or anything else needed for childbearing. Why? Ask my friend Angela, who had breast cancer at the age of 26. She just had her first child.

Well I hate to tell you But a member isnt needed in child birth at all.

Ever heard of Invetro? Donor sperm? Sperm retrieval?

Its not necessary....., Its about as necessary as a set of breasts are I think that would be a nice comparrison.

Sorry but some D*cks just arent needed.

No, that would be wonderful, and I'm sure millions of people would kill to hear that. The compensation is for being told she had cancer, that IS traumatic. For the majorly disfiguring surgical procedure. That IS traumatic. For having to prematurely ponder her own mortality. That IS traumatic. These are things she is left with that are still painful no matter how many times we all say "Well, it could be worse, you could really have cancer." That's a lame azz consolation prize if you ask me.

Maybe the woman should be thankful that she wasnt killed during surgery.... But that infection she got was part of the bonus package? Maybe she could consider having new breasts slapped on her chest so now they can be perky, But we will have to graft muscle from her behind because a RADICAL Mastectomy was done and we stripped her chest down to just about bare bone and removed all the Cancerious tissue OOPPSSS its not cancer but nice incision though isnt it????
