Just wondering if your hospital has a morgue to hold deceased patients until the funeral home or coroner comes to pick them up.

We do...However it only holds two. I guess the design engineers didn't think more people could die at any given time...

Our morgue holds 4 but the best part is that it is right next to the cafeteria - and they often serve mystery meat Hummmm.....................................

EEWWW. We do have a morgue. We just remodeled it about a year and a half ago. Do ya think they could have added another cooler when they remodeled? Nope, Can only refrigerate 1 at a time, only room for two. Just not adequate space.

I thought morgues were mandatory at hospitals or at least adequately sized. Ours has 12 slabs with one that locks for criminal cases. And my city isn't huge either.

One regional hospital I worked at had a 4 "bed" morgue and during the floods up there had 20 bodies "stacked" EEEEEWWWWWW!!!!!!
An old nursing freind of mine told of the time when nurses quarters were on the hospital campus and the morgue was in a quiet tree shrouded rather beautiful area many of the nurses were proposed to outside that morgue. Can you imagine it "We will be together until death us do part"
"Well don't look now Honey but that ain't too far away":chuckle

Most Hospitals in the UK where i've worked have a morgue, however every one I have come across is known by the name "Rose Cottage".
I had a colleague who was looking for a new house, her favorite was a house called rose cottage but turned it down.
We did suggest she just changed the name but she said she would never feel comfortable, I hope she didn't have to explain to the present owners why she could not buy it.
My thanks to all who have answered my poll today!
The hospital where I'm working is a 200 bed hospital and they have no morgue. I was quite surprised to say the least. For some reason, I just assumed that there are laws or JACHO standards or something like that which requires hospitals to have morgues....
Silly me!!!
It is interesting that all responses so far have stated they do have a morgue of some sort... my "No" answer seems to be the only "No" response so far... Hmmmmm....
Thank you all again!

I thought our hospital was bad.
We have only 6 slabs in a 900 bed facility!!! I guess they're pretty optimistic! :chuckle

Nope, we don't have a morgue. When a patient dies, we just keep him/her in the room until the family and/or the funeral home comes (of course, we have long since moved the roommate to another bed elsewhere on the floor). If it's a coroner's case, the pt. is shipped to this one funeral home down the street from the hospital and the post is performed there.

We have one, but it's not very big. It might hold two max, plus a few body parts. We once had a torso thawing in there. Some doctor had it for educational purposes.
Oddly enough, it's next to the cafeteria. Many of the hospitals I have done clinicals in have the morgue next to the cafeteria. Could it be that's because they use the same fridge system to save cost?
