Just wondering if your hospital has a morgue to hold deceased patients until the funeral home or coroner comes to pick them up.

That is exactly why the morgue is almost always next to the cafeteria. It is a cost containment and room issue. They generally use the same cooling unit for the morgue as the reefer units for the food. Thye do have a wall seperating them though. The units are extremely expensive to install and maintain.

When I lived in Scottsdale, Arizona the main hospital did not have a morgue. The funeral homes came directly to the bed and took the deceased patient directly out. Many of the patients, at the time, were from out of state so they needed arrangements taken care of right away. The old morgue area was turned into the credit union.

In Thailand most of the hospitals just have a room for immediately embalming the patient, then they are sent directly to the Temple. Unless of course the patient was involved in a suspicious death, etc., then they are sent to one fo the hospitals that has a forensic pathologist on staff.

I used to work in a hospital whose main building (which contained the morgue) was about a hundred years old. Man, that morgue was creepy. The kind of things nightmares are made of. Hated having to escort the deceased there. Policy said one nurse had to accompany. Shiver.

The morgue at the hospital I work at holds about 30.
