Im a nursing student here in richmond, va; i work at a major hospital here, and my hospital has a facebook page, and they send me messages about open shifts, and meetings and things like that, its really cool, just wanted to know if other places do the same kind of things?:typing

I'm glad you think it's cool.

I'm thinking, As if hiding behind caller ID & answerphone isn't enough.

That kind of thing - along with employers checking Facebook and MySpace pages to monitor the off-duty behavior of active and potential employees - is another of countless reasons why I refuse to have accounts on social networking sites.

our hospital is exactly the opposite....

a few months ago a message came out from pr stating that if staff use social networking sites they need to be very careful about mentioning anything about the hospital.

there was some sort of disclaimer to the effect of "...the opinions expressed by individuals in no way reflects the hospital...blah blah blah..". absolutely designed to protect the reputation of the hospital in case someone's behaviour online was deemed inappropriate.

in one of our provinces, photos/wall postings from facebook were used in court to challenge the professional integrity of the defendant. not a nurse, but i believe a professional. lesson: be very careful about what you post where. i think that case prompted our hospital to ask people to remove any associations on fb.

just an fyi.

so to answer the op...nope. can't see this place doing anything like that!

Eww, I wouldn't let them be my friend! I have my fb privacy settings really high for a reason - and there's not even anything bad on my site! The only friends I have on fb are people I know IRL. I've never understood why people put things up about getting wasted and blah blah blah, and put up some of the scary pics they do! And fb is worse than myspace since it has your real name as the display! Anyway, only my friends can comment and see my page, and I plan to keep it that way. Oh yeah - the hospital is not my friend!!!!! Not that I can see them doing anything like that anyway.

My hospital doesn't even have an email address for me. As far as they know, I might not even have one, and I'm happy to keep it that way.

The phone works just fine ;)

Ughhh....what a stupid and annoying policy on the hospital's part (at least in my view).

The last time I checked, facebook was place to keep in touch with friends in a FUN way, join silly groups and send people ridiculous pieces of flair. When I worked at a nursing home this summer, they already had my phone # and God knows they gave that a workout trying endlessly to cover their short-staffed shifts. I quickly started just ignoring the phone calls, because the way I see it, when I'm off work, I'm physically and mentally DONE with work. I strive to do a good, thorough job when I'm there, but THAT'S IT.

When I'm home, I want to relax, see family and friends, do other stuff, and go on facebook without feeling like I'm being sucked back into something work-related.

Sheesh!

(off my soapbox now)

Does my hospital contact me through facebook?

Uhhh, no.

And even if they wanted to - the answer is still "NO!"

I love my place of work and compared to my old job it's 10 billion times better ... but some things - like oil and water - aren't meant to mix.

There is an old German saying: "Arbeit ist Arbeit und Schnapps ist Schnapps" which roughly translates to "Work when you work and Play when you play".

I often approach this issue based on my days in the Army - specifically the "need to know" basis.

There are certain things my Employer needs to know about me - in order to establish that I'm a good employee (character reference, previous employer reference etc.)

But there are also things my Employer does not need to know about me (where I hang out, what I do in my free time, who my friends are etc). So long as it doesn't affect my duties and my job, it is nobody's business...

Social networking sites are, IMHO, not appropriate situations/settings for employee/employer interaction. Such websites are, by definition, not-professional (hence why they are called 'social').

In any case, however, I'm very careful about revealing anything that could be even remotely used to identify me online. One of the jobs I held during college was in the IT department - that experience alone taught me that the Internet is nearly not as anonymous as most people think it is! It was a sobering realization (to say the least!)

My :twocents:

cheers,

Couldn't live without my Caller ID and an answering machine!

Oh my. That is not cool at all. If that were my situation I would delete my account immediately.

My hospital does after they claimed they couldn't get ahold of me while I was in class. Um, yeah, I had my cell turned off. So I set up an email account just for them.

I got reamed by HR and my boss for not being available at all times - they didn't care if I was in the br taking a pee.
