I am in my second and last year of my associate degree nursing program and am currently taking Medical Surgical Nursing for Adults and Children II and Nursing Skills. When I read the Med-Surg text, I get SOOO extremely sleepy! Is this common or is there something wrong with me? If this happens to you, what do you do to prevent yourself from just going to bed and going to sleep? (Other than your exam grade and strong desire to pass that NCLEX...)
Thanks!

You're welcome! That's what allnurses is all about, supporting and helping each other! :lvan: I was thinking about it as I was reading someone else's post about reading in bed... I think I have set myself up for this problem. I used to have trouble getting sleepy at bedtime, so I started reading for pleasure in bed and it helped me get sleepy. Now I get sleepy reading even when I'm not in bed.... DUH!! What was I thinking...?!
When I read my books I get tired and bored, it's the books because lord knows I read the whole twilight series in 4 days and fought sleep to keep reading when I had already read for like 16 hours straight.
I am not that type of learner, I record my lectures and follow along the power points printed out while relistening to those and doing the CD's that come with the books, I enjoy this method of studying a lot better and I stay awake. LOL
What a great thread. I am in my second week of ADN classes, sitting here reading, and it is excruciating because all I want to do is take a nap. I'm fine during classes, but days off when I need to be reading, I am so drained. Great site by the way. This is my first post, I'm so glad I found this site. I really appreciate that there's a male nursing student forum.
I think I am. However, with the new, more demanding schedule I have to wake up every morning Monday-Friday (except clinical days) at 6 am and I am use to sleeping in to around 11 or 12.
this is also my schedule... and my prof assign at least 2-3 chapters to read a day (at least 50 pages per chapter)
anyone know how to read faster and retain the information?
I feel your pain. To keep myself awake, I take frequent "moving" breaks where I would get up, walk around, maybe talk to someone (out loud) - anything that requires movement! Sometimes when I have hours and hours of studying ahead of me, I'll make sure to include a gym break in between swimming and jogging always wakes me up. Just be sure you don't exhaust yourself with an intense workout, make it a light, short jog. (I'm usually there for 30 minutes only.)
I always focus better when I come home.

Even sitting in class, like I am currently, I'm reviewing the text and I just want to go to sleep.
