Hi all. I've been an O.R. nurse for a grand total of 8 days and by halfway through an 8-hour shift, my legs, feet and back are killing me. I don't know if I need better shoe support, or my body is just adjusting to standing in one spot for most of the day...has anyone else experienced this? I never had this problem on a general med-surg floor, where I was hustling consistently and never felt this type of pain in my body. Please tell me your body starts to adjust. I'm thinking of buying a back brace of some sort, and getting fitted for orthotics...and I'm only 24 :'(

I would definitely
I would definitely invest in shoes with better support. I found that it made a world of difference.

Good shoes, good posture and strength training exercises and taking good care of yourself drinking enough water and healthy good, personally i get a massage every month because my stress goes to my back, and a really good pedicure with hot stone foot massage its like vitamin for me;-)
Strength training i use jilian Michaels no more trouble zones, got to warn you though its 40min but i always recommend to make sure you are off the next day when you start. Good luck. Shoes i buy Sanita brand from the European walking store, they are lighter than danskos and a better fit for me.

I first assist and can really have some long hours on my feet/legs! If I put in 12 hours, my calves would really be sore the next day but fortunately found a great pair of Keens with very high arches. Made a world of difference! Also, have you considered Jobst stockings or some ted hose? I personally get too hot but have friends who have obtained some relief with them, with the added benefit of aiding varicose veins Good luck!!

My feet killed the first couple weeks getting used to all that time on concrete floors. But then I got used to it and I'm fine now. Get a good pair a shoes and your feet will adjust.

Look into dansko shoes, and support socks.

Compression stockings are good too! Especially for you OR nurses. I used to wear them at the hospital :)

Try the Dansko XP - they have more cushioning than the regular pair. I also wear a thick pair of Thor-lo socks. The shoes have saved my feet and made all the difference in the world how I feel after a long day. :-)

I wear compression socks from the sock aisle in the grocery store- to aid circulation.
I'm 32 and I get terrible low back pain and all kinds of foot pains but it is much improved since I switched from 12s to 10s. I rotate several pairs of shoes- no shoe is comfortable for 12 hours. Sometimes I have to switch in the middle of the day, depending on what is bothering me. Danskos surprisingly are most tolerable, also a pair of foam clogs from the uniform store (anywear) with my own insoles, and a pair of merrell slip ons.

I use to work in a fast pace recovery room in a mega hospital ,and there wasn't even wall/chair to lean on. In th end ,I got use to it and what helped was changing shoes during the shift. Oh, I just read borntowearscrubRN's post while typing this and that is the truth.
