I was so young -REALLY YOUNG and no real bills- I " Balled out " . Man , I spent every dime like there was no tomorrow. Plus, over night , it was like my credit report went into space and the same day I bought a "92" Range Rover in "93". Back then (Range Rover) was still exotic and get this - police stopped me so much - I would save and show my check stubs to Chicago Police when stopped . Never would fail -CPD would ask , " Hey how you afford a truck like this ? " . Memories , memories

My suggestion is to stay under the radar , keep a smile (but not too happy ) , hang in there , but look for another job. Go figure , who knows what politics are at work there. Check this out , right here at my hospital's ER the mangers will use the power of the shifts to get people out. Imagine , staggered shifts from Hell- examples: 1pm-1am , 3pm-3am , 12am-12pm , 1:30am-2pm or whatever sadistic shifts they can think of. Also, if you can , find another job inside your system because we all know this healthcare thing is almost two stops from a monopoly.

For me , it was just being at the right place at the right time. In the beginning , I just kept looking for something better ,and finally found it. It's not perfect ,but back then I was listening to Napster , and now watching Netflix between pts . So, kool. Got my BSN from Chamberlain -then my Cert. and make $50 plus an hour. Not bad -not bad at all . But always looking for something better-always !

Just pay for Magnet and it's all yours

" Movements become business -that turn into rackets " and that is what I see with Magnet. Yes, I'm in a wealthy Magnet hospital and things are good , but they were good anyway with so much cash on hand . However, in the end , the CEO's bonus is through the roof and laying off the seasoned nurses. Plus, lower orientation for new hires/new grads that has resulted in many bad situations. Also, the more that I have read up on Magnet -the more I realize -if you pay for Magnet -it's in the bag. Go figure I'm a Magnet Champion .

It's all about survival . Upper Amin. clearly understands the stats and probably help write your old text books ,but spit in the face of idealistic nurses. Just think about it-what a Five -Star ,Magnet Status show some healthcare facilities put on. Preaching Evidence Based Practice ,etc. but all about money and if the pt is healed that's great , but money before everything . Plus, it's not just our profession -just take a breath and look around. Thankfully, like any other movement -they usually start with young people . I'm too burned out to fight anymore -so I'm just going to continue to give them what they want. Keep up the fight !

That being said , it is still easy to get into routines and patterns of operation which create a narrow scope of perspective. In other words ,being in the medical field has created an intentional numbness. Worst of all , I have witnessed nurses try and be " The Advocate " and they are perceived as the trouble maker and soon not heard from again. Dead give away of a new grad -The stethoscope Also, doctors ( even seen docs fake listen ) don't use them - they just order an expensive test or treatment. Ok,ok, for an NG tube placement or ET tube, and can't count how many times MDs ask ,"Anybody have a scope ?" . That's about it. So , I don't carry one . Plus, I dare you to lay down that expensive Littmann -gone

It sounds so good on paper -now tell that to upper administration and check if they give a _____ ? Plus, I'm writing this from a huge wealthy Magnet and Academic hospital. Preach one thing and do another.

Since "93" , during the nursing shortage , I have had so many jobs. Those were the days , I would " peak to peek " for another job, and at the end of the year I would have a stack of W2s. Matter of fact, the job a have now was a life saver- I was running out of places. So far, been at my present location ( still moving around inside) since "99" and it's been great. However , if another shortage came about -I would be back out again. Have done everything except L & D and Surgery- Really !

16 y/old and best friend's Dad ( he was a dentist and I wanted to be just like him ) talked me into being a nurse . Matter of fact, after going to an all boy high school , it was going to be a cool way to meet the ladies.

Yes, but lucky for me, it was back in the early "90"s . Nursing Shortage ! On that note, I ran with it ,and rotated junk jobs all the time.

This is so interesting ! Not long ago ,there was a post that was asking for advice to HR questions for where I am presently employed ,and my response was - "As long as you are young and cute , you will be hired.". My Super Monster of a teaching hospital has always done this sort of hiring ,once the nursing shortage was over.
