Doctors disrespect Male nurses.

Nurses Men

Published

Hi,

I'm a male nursing student, and I was wondering whether this it true.

Do Doctors in hospitals, male or female disrespect male nurses because they look at these males as dumb and not smart enough to become a doctor ?

Do doctors disrespect male nurses in general?

I am not trying to come off as offensive since I am training to be a male nurse as well, it is just that this is an insecurity that has plagued me for a year now and i thought that it is just one of those things that just disappears, but it has not.

thank you and I look forward to being part of this site.

I have been an RN for 23 years now, and I have never noticed any doctor disrespecting a male nurse, nor have I ever heard a male nurse say that he thought he was treated disrepectfully. Stop worrying. I doubt very seriously that any doctor is going to look at you and wonder why you weren't smart enough to be a doctor. Doctors have their own careers to deal with, and are not going to be concerned with yours! You will gain their respect in time. On the other hand, we have a lot of foreign doctors where I work, and I have noticed some of them do not respect female nurses. There is such a vast culture difference between the US and the countries where some of these doctors are from, and they seem to carry that with them. Females are not treated equally in some countries, as you know. I know several doctors who have sons that are RN's. We have lots of male nurses where I work.

Any static you might get is probably related to being a student. Unfortunately I agree with apple, I've noticed male nurses are usually treated better by peers and higher-ups.

If a doc is disrespecting a male nurse he or she is probably disrespecting all nurses regardless of gender. If you feel disrespected and you think it regards knowledge than go out there and get informed so the next time this doc shows up you give that doc he facts and if doc still disrespect you than you know it's just his or hers own personal issues and ignore it or if you like report the person. Stand up for yourself.

Awesome, I was always afraid of doctors in the work place, male and female doctors. This always made me nervous during clinicals. Now I'm not, cause i know that a nurse makes sure a doctor's good work is not in vain. Also, this is a bit off topic, but would a female doctor date a male nurse ? Is it possible, or do female doctors look at male nurses as less masculine, hence less attractive ?

I would be more worried about the older, female nurses that resent/dislike/are irritated by/scared of male nurses. They're out there. Now, you are also going to run into male nurses that hate everyone. Or female nurses that only like male nurses that are friends with female nurses. More often, you will discover docs that will not date nurses, or doctors, or anyone else in the health field. Or your experience may find you dating a doctor, could be a male or female depending on your tastes.

Point is, quit worrying about it. My docs respect me (and will respect you) not because I am a male nurse but because I do a good job and they can trust me. I doubt that was the case in my first few years but it's probably the same measured caution they were using with me that I use now when dealing with med students and 1st year residents. Do docs think you are dumb? Maybe. I do know that I have saved several from making medication errors and caught things they missed. It happens, they're thankful, we move on.

As far as the dating thing goes....#1. Don't sh*t where you get your food. Ever. #2. And masculinity doesn't come from your profession. FYI

Admittedly, I have never encountered this issue in my long nursing career. Having said that, when an issue arises and a doctor is up-set about something, they come to my office and when they see who are they dealing with they tend to back down, & express their concerns in a more friendly manner. Once again it could be my 6' bodybuilder statue, that makes them take a step back. However, when something goes wrong I'm the first one to admit it, and own the consequences. Therefore, I have never felt or been in this type of scenario with any doctor. Having said that, one has to earn the respect in order to receive it in return, which in return it will earn you their trust. In other words, you need to be up to date on your medical knowledge and stand your ground...just saying

This is good to know. my parent always told me that masculinity comes from your profession. They all call me the girl of the family because I am doing nursing, so I lied and told them I'm doing paramedics.

I want to be a nurse and just take care of patients, so I am happy to be learning how to be a nurse in Australia. I know I should not care what others think, but I love my family members, and it just hurts to be called a girly guy by them and both my friend and some of my relatives tell me that girls get more un-attracted to guys who are nurses . Hence why I'm posting on here to get rid of this insecurity.

I will not date a doctor/nurse in my hospital; your right about the Don't sh*t where you get your food.

Thank you for your help. I am come to some sort of peace with myself in doing nursing.

I feel more manly as a nurse than I did as a fighter jet mechanic in the Air Force. I work harder, too.

Anyone that thinks that nursing is 'girly' has obviously never been a nurse, and has absolutely no idea how physically and emotionally brutal it is.
