What is your favorite area in nursing, and do you currently work in it?
Just keep me away from kids.
For the last 12 years I've been enjoying various areas of med-surg within the same hospital and doing charge. Being in charge is not my thing, but can't seem to get out of doing it since I haven't learned the art of saying "no".
I've seen general med-surg, med-surg trauma, med-surg and intermediate neuro, and now medical telemetry.
They are talking about making our unit a medical stepdown ICU, within the next year (meaning probably two or more years knowing this institution) which I've been saying for years that this hospital needs, so I'll probably stick with that.
In the fall I'll be taking a critical care course, so I might be interesting in that area.
My favorite area is Maternal/Child. I love L&D, Postpartum and Nursery and have no problems floating between the 3. Unfortunately, after 13 years of OB, I got married and ended up moving to a new city and can't seem to find a hospital near me with OB openings.
I also taught childbirth education and baby care for 3 years and I absolutely loved that......I have thought of going back to school to become a Maternal/Child Clinical Nurse Specialist but have heard they are rarely used so I will have to do more research there.
Currently, I am working Med/Surg, learning alot but not really happy. I also continue to actively search for an OB job and I occasionally teach private childbirth education classes for couples/moms that decide they do not choose to go the hospital based class route.

I'm sorry to hear that Vicky. Have you given thought about becoming a Midwife? They're popular now.

Me too BlueEyes. It was my favorite rotation while in nursing school. I just loved demonstrating how to bathe the little munchkin to her/his parents.
