Do you wear your engagement rings at work?

i am engaged but he hasn't bought a ring yet because i have been pondering this question. i am actually a nursing student still but plan to work in a hospital setting after graduation. so my question to you, the experienced nurses, is do you wear a solitaire style or large center diamond ring to work? or just your wedding band? anyone who does wear their ring, does it cause issues with gloves and stuff? i know this may sound like a silly question but we (my fi and i) were thinking that if it would get in the way he might get me a diamond band for an engagement ring that doesn't stick out like a solitaire would if other people who have worked in nursing jobs had issues with their rings.

i wear just my wedding band to the hospital and remove my engagement ring (leaving it at home of course).

i've always worn my rings to work -- i don't take them off. but i left my grandmother's engagement ring at home, and the jewelry that my mother gave me when she went into assisted living. someone broke into our house and stole all of my jewelry except what i was wearing. i now wear every piece i still posess every time i leave the house -- it just doesn't feel safe to leave it at home.

My husband was lovely enough to buy me a flat band with diamonds specifically for work. I have my regular engagement ring and band (attached after we were married) and this other ring that I love and wear to work.

I'm not sure where you are financially, but some day this might work. Until then you can always go bare handed if you find your larger engagement ring too cumbersome like I did. I got it stuck on gloves and I was afraid of getting it stuck on a patient's skin or losing the diamond, etc.

This was an unexpected surprise and I am very happy having the beautiful band to wear. In hindsight I suppose I could have just left my wedding band separate from my engagement ring, but they really do wear better as one single unit. I wear each of my rings about 50% of my time. It all works out.

No matter what ring (if any) you are wearing, congratulations! and be sure to treat each other well!!

Don't they teach this in nursing school anymore?

No, I don't wear my engagement ring at work, I do however wear my wedding ring and my puzzle ring. I wash my hands alot, sanitize like crazy, wash my rings with swabs and when I worked recovery/OR/LDR they were off. But in ER it is way easier to wear the rings...

I wear my wedding ring (very small bang with channel-set diamonds) only usually. Got the diamonds on it so I could have some sparkle without worrying about the big diamond. Sometimes I forget to take my engagement ring off though, and no problems with gloves when that happens.

I just got engaged too :) my fiacne bought me a flat Radiance cut diamond and I also work in a psych ward as a student nursing assistant and haven't had any prolbems. And as far as bringing home c.diff mrsa, and of those " has anyone heard of a new thing called GLOVES". I don't even touch a pt. without them and as far as mrsa, c.diff we have to gown up even to go into their rooms. And I too wash my hands as well as wipe my ring off with an alchol wipe before leaving work. So no worries about ring style, bc there are nurses on my floor with huge diamonds and have no prolbem!.. congrats:)

Congrats to you on your engagement! That's wonderful!!

It has nothing to do with nursing school. Many hospitals allow caregivers to wear rings. Look how many gross things get on our scrubs and we then wear those in other patients' rooms, to the cafeteria, on the train, to our homes. At least we wear gloves over our rings and they get washed and sanitized regularly.

Anne,

Thanks!! I'm really excited!

Congrats Sarah!

At our facility we are allowed to wear rings, and most of my coworkers did and do. I always have worn mine except for when I worked OB/L and D and had to work in the NBN or scrub in on C/S.

I have been an ER nurse for most of my career and most of the babies we got in usually went straight to NI or PI.

Anne,

Thanks!! I'm really excited!

I have been married for 6 years to my dh, and this was the 3rd marriage for both of us. The first was a pilot, then no. 2 was a police officer. I knew right away that my sweetie was definetly "the one" and worth waiting for. I am thankful for every day we have together, I just wish we had gotten together sooner. Then I wouldn't have learned some of the things I have learned about life and love.

Our school policy is one wedding/engagement ring, a required watch and only studs in our ears. Nothing else is allowed.

My wedding ring and engagement ring are the same, I didn't want 2 rings so my ring has a large center stone with diamonds on the side like it would look if it was 2 fit together. I don't wear it though, my finger got to fat and I refuse to have it re-sized. But reading about the prongs getting loosened I now won't wear it even when I can. I have a pair of diamond earrings that the jewelery store refused to clean because I guess the diamond was loose and I had no idea, the thought of looking down and seeing my diamond gone would scare me to much. Hadn't even thought about that factor until reading it in this thread.

I have this beautiful ring of the HI state flower my husband got me when he was on a business trip there, it lays flat and has a few small diamonds. I have been wearing that, I scrub it with a toothbrush and toothpaste though often and wipe it with Alcohol wipes every shift. (the toothpaste thing was passed down, have no idea if it really cleans good like grandma said :p)

I've always worn my engagement and wedding band. My wedding band is just plain platinum and my engagement ring has a center 1/2 carat princess cut and 2 pear shaped diamonds (1/4 carat) on each side. Nothing fancy, and I've never had any problem with them getting caught. I do, however, get my prongs checked periodically just in case.
