In most cases I restrain myself from passing a judgement on obsessive eaters.
In recent weeks though, I have become severely agitated when I go to my classroom which has a sign right on the door reading "NO FOOD OR DRINK" and people insist on bringing their dinner or their snacks in and eating them in front of everyone while people are trying to do their work and socializing while they eat. The classroom should not be treated like their living room.
They almost seem to be testing their limits. The teacher lets them get away with it and the school has ignored the complaint I sent to them.
I find the sound of them chewing their food revolting, offensive and distracting. Sometimes the sound of the food sloshing inside their mouths gives me chills down my spine.
The cafeteria is just right in walking distance, a place where if I see them eating, I refrain from evaluating them.
They also have option to take their food outside, a place where I can easily mind my own business.
Not only do people insist on bringing food into class but also continue to eat for extended periods of time. They go get more food after they finish what they have.
Unless it's a small class with a mutual agreement about food, eating in front of people is disgusting and disrespectful.
No, I would not want to diagnose and analyze someone who I don't even know.
I was just saying they do remind me of this when they keep on eating for extended periods of time. When one snack bag is gone they go back for another one when they should have planned a healthy meal to keep them full.
Obsessive eaters? Is this about obsessive eaters or people that eat annoyingly in class?
Are you implying people that eat in class are obsessive eaters or obsessive eaters eat in class?
The first part of your post set the tone for your entire post.
If you are this freaked out by people eating in your presence, what will you do when they are pooping, peeing, puking, bleeding, belching, screaming, crying, etc. in your direction? I mean, you do realize you are preparing to become a nurse, right? In which profession, people EATING will be the least of your worries?
Not one single time have I ever tried to deal with patients' bodily functions and study at the same time.
The point isn't whether it bothers someone or not. The point is it a rule or not? You may not like a doctors order, but you don't just make up your own. If you don't like the rule you don't just disregard it. You talk with the school about changing the rule.
One reason it might be a rule is because it does bother some people.
In our small breakroom at work, one staff member heated up their salmon burger in the communal microwave. Talk about smelly!Refrain from "evaluating" people eating in the cafeteria? How generous of you. On a side note, it kinda creeps me out to think that when I am eating in a public place, I am being judged by others (although not the OP thankfully).
Also, as others have mentioned, being a bedside nurse is going to be difficult if the sound of eating sends "chills" down your spine...and since this is a real disorder, maybe you should consider getting some help with this.
When patients are eating and I am working with them I do not try to read or study and therefore I don't get sensory overload around them.
I have been with hundreds of patients while they're eating. This does not bother me because it's their own private space. The difference is I am not trying to study and therefore they can't hurt my grades. Also remember this post is about eating in the classroom, not eating in ones own private quarters.
I'm not sure I follow. I thought you said they were eating during lecture, but now you say that you are trying to study. Are you studying during lecture? Are you just in there to study and people come in to also study (and eat?). If that's the case, remove yourself from the space and go to the library, or invest in some really great ear plugs.
Have you asked these people why they are always eating in class. Maybe they get hypoglycemic if they don't eat. Maybe they just left work and didn't get to eat. Maybe they have a medical condition and need to eat to take medication. Maybe they are just hungry. I'm sure you eat in other places besides the dining room all the time.
My husband doesn't make an issue when students eat in his classroom, unless the food is stinky and he does ask that they toss the remains in the rest room trashcans because they're plastic lined. That contains any bugs. What drives me nuts is gum and mint chomping! Yikes!
That drives me NUTS too! I have to turn my head when I see someone chomping and snapping their gum And have their mouth wide open -
Something else that gets me is someone chomping ice really loud - but for a different reason. It actually makes my teeth hurt - I have always had dental problems. Sounds crazy that just hearing someone eat ice makes me sensitive.

I snack during lectures because I need help staying awake.
I've learned that my pet peeves are MINE. Instead of trying to change others, I just remember there's something I do that annoys someone else (like apparently my eating in class.) I'm sure saiderap can come up with SOMETHING that he/she does that is annoying to others. Like getting in a huge tizzy or over minor things. Posting in huge fonts.
We're all in a giant world together. Energy spent being annoyed by others is usually better spent focusing on oneself.

I wonder what they might do when someone spills a drink into one of those computers. Will they think this NO FOOD OR DRINK is not a good rule.
