Do you have a side hustle?

Nurses General Nursing

I am curious to know if you do something else on the side to earn extra income in addition to being a nurse.

I know some nurses work somewhere else PRN and a few nurses I know who do photography and such on the side. What is your side hustle?

Specializes in ICU.

full time as an office nurse & prn at the hospital. I love both of my jobs for different reasons and feel like i'm meeting my needs personally to grow as a nurse. I didn't want to pick either or, so i chose both! :)

I do chart abstraction remotely. I used to work a lot of OT but find I just can't force myself anymore; this somewhat makes up for that extra cash I was accustomed to earning.

Swellz,

I applied for an oncology abstractor position and am due to take my initial assessment. What should I expect? Should I review staging? Do they ask specific staging questions during the interview ( that is if I get one, if I pass the initial assessment). Thanks

The company I work for does not ask us to do much staging; our abstraction is mostly based on physician statement for stage.
I just needed oncology experience to be familiar with the treatments and terminology--tumor registrars do abstraction for that company as well. I've been working for them for over four years now.

To echo Trixie, you aren't interpreting the information (for example, coming up with the stage), just collecting and organizing it. Where I work, there's set parameters you follow, so it's really just working within those. It's pretty straightforward (or at least, as straightforward as the chart is). I don't have much to compare this to as it's my only abstracting job, but my interview was more about them getting to know my oncology experience, so they knew what charts I was competent to review. Unless you know they are looking for specific experience (liquid vs solid tumors or something), I would focus on how you have experience with a wide variety of diagnoses. Good luck!

Neonatal ICU RN PRN. I do it because I love the babies, but the extra money is nice too.

I sometimes wager on PS4 Battlefield 4 Hardcore games. Does that count?

Swellz and Trixie13, if you're willing to share, I'd love to know what company you do abstracting for and how many hours per week you work. (I'm trying to PM you but the site is not cooperating, or maybe it's user error -- ha.) I'm also an oncology nurse and I'm thinking about reducing my hours at my full-time job to do abstracting from home, but I've read some negative reviews from oncology nurse abstractors about one company in particular so I'm curious what your experiences are. Thanks!

I am not either of those people, but I know lots of nurses who work for Flatiron doing oncology-related abstraction.

Yes, that is the company I work for--since 2016. Part-time is a minimum of 10 hours a week, no more than 19 hours. No complaints here--their policies are clear and fair and their education has improved over the years. I was winging it a bit at first, but I had done some abstracting of Core Measures in the early days so I was familiar with the process.  We work from a virtual task "pile," so sometimes I run out of tasks before the end of the month, but it is "extra" money here, so that's not an issue for me.
I gave chemo for several years, but I have learned a lot doing oncology abstraction.  I make the same hourly rate as I did doing telephone triage--less than acute but more than clinic. For a side hustle I am satisfied.

I am back to growing flowers, herbs, veggies and microgreens. Notsure if I care to make a profit but I will sell off my excess.

I have sometimes done agency nursing on the side.  Very common here.

Being an Englishman in France and having a certificate in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) I have given private one to one English lessons, though not done that for some time now.  The last girl I gave lessons to (10 years ago) was doing a law degree. She brought me legal texts in English that even I had trouble understanding!

Flatiron! And like Trixie said, I don't have any complaints. It is truly a side hustle for me given the hour limitations, but I'm expecting to make it my primary gig once baby comes in August (if I can afford to go per diem at the hospital anyway). But the more you work, the more modules you are accredited for, and the greater chance you have of there being work for you to do.
