Do any nurses work "normal" hours??

Nurses General Nursing

I really want to become an RN. I know that many nurses have to work long, crazy hours. I am a single mom of a one year old son with no help. My question is if I become an RN can I work normal hours so I can still be there for my son? Please don't say negative things to me..just answer the question. Thank you!

In Chile, the nurses work more than 8 hours a day as they go against the self but through no fault of the practitioner, so no fault of the system. Against that, in this country can not do anything because perderiaos time trying to make a difference instead of helping those in need. I disagree that enfermeroa work 12 to 16 hours a day sometimes up to 24 hrs. Where is our self?

Day shift at my hospital and others in this area is from 7-3:30 which would probably mean some child care but you'd have more time after school to spend with the kiddos.

A lot is going to depend on where you live. The bigger the city the more varied the opportunities. Look around and see what's going on in your area. Don't pay attention to the nursing school propaganda. Go beyond the newspapers and internet and talk to people who are already in the field in your locale. One possible resource would be your local state workforce office. They might have some info regarding different types of nursing jobs that you haven't thought of. Whatever you eventually decide, GOOD LUCK.

I went to a big clinic right out of nursing school, but networking got me that job. After 10 years of that I have been in research. Both with pretty regular hours. Not easy to get, but they are out there..........

I'm not sure what opportunities are out there for new grads. I am an educator in a clinic setting and work M-F-no nights, holidays, or weekends. I was an RN for 13 years before I had this type of job.

Hi there,

I currently teach a CNAI course through my local community college. I am full time, and work 8-5, with an hour lunch break, no nights, no weekends, no holidays. I understand that most CNA instructors are part time and the full time jobs are few and far between, but do your research. I know of others that work pretty much the same schedule who work for insurance companies as well as public health. With all of theses some clinical experience is needed, at least one year. Research, you may find something.

Are you working on ASN or BSN...some of the jobs with "normal hours" have the requirement of BSN as well as some experience. Just something to think about. Good luck on your journey!

I worked intake at a prison and worked M-F 0900-1700. I currently work at a different prison and work 0730-1600, days of the week vary at this job.

Before I answer your question (others really have) the real question I have for you, is how will you be able to go to school with a one-year-old without support.

School is hard enough with support--without it--don't know if that's doable....

OR's have different shifts (depending on the facility) and some have 8 or 10 hour shifts.
