Do you think it is necessary to have a laptop to be successful in college?

Depends on the program, but not in general. Obviously, if the program/school in question requires a laptop, that answer would be different.
I have a laptop, but never bring it to school, and use the computer lab on campus regularly when I do want to work on stuff at school.

Nope. A desktop (or laptop) at home makes things easier, however.

We have beautiful campuses down south, so sometimes I like to study outside under the gazebo or in the campus gardens. Other than that, and going to a coffee house with classmates, they really aren't required.
Thanks for your response's. I have a PC at home but I hear a lot about college students "needing" a laptop! Which of course I cant afford! Good to know it wont be necessary!

It is not necessary to have laptops in college but it is useful when the computer labs are full and say you have to turn in a paper for that day or you just want to get it typed up and print it at home so you don't have to worry about it, which I do so by the time i get home, i just print it and enjoy the rest of my free time.

Nope. You really don't.
Yep, forgot about this one. Labs do get overcrowded and sometimes their systems go down. If they are close to you, you can also go to the public libraries. Also, to save on paying for internet service, you can go to a "hot" zone like the library with your laptop to go online for your internet classes. One way I have saved money on the internet is to use my Blackberry phone as a modem. I just pay an extra $15 a month and I can hook my Blackberry up to my laptop and instant modem anywhere! No need for Road Runner!
I guess the best advice, if you can afford it, is:
"It is better to have and not need, than to need and not have."
Wait until Christmas and the beginning of the New Year for really great deals, especially on desktop models!

They're very, very helpful--especially since most public libraries, coffee houses, etc. have wireless--but if you can't afford one, you can't afford one :). You can get by without one. The best advice I have--whether you are able to get a laptop at sometime or not--is to not leave things until the last minute. That way when labs, etc. are too full, you're not desperate .
Sometimes before school there are good deals on laptops, too.

Yes, but not to bring to class. You really need one at home.
I bought one and I also have a wireless router. It's really nice to be able to take it anywhere in the house, outside, etc, and I can even read/work on things right before I go to bed.

i dont thin you need one to be successful, i think it is an extra that is nice to have....but i know plenty of peop[le who dont even have a desk top. They use their friends for papers or even go to the library if worst comes to worst while they are studying
I think I will get one when I get my income tax next year. My 3 kids are all school age and probably between them and myself it will get a little crowded on my desk top. Plus - I think it would be nice to be able to use it while they are at their soccer practices and while I am on lunch at work..etc.. I will need to take advantage of every available minute.
