Do you have internet at work?

Just wondering if anyone here has intenet at work and if so, what are the rules regarding its use? Over here the icu has internet, but all the other floors dont, and so at night the icu nurses are plugged to the internet browsing, while the other nurses are 'working'. just asking for opinions here and what are the legal ramifications.

Nope, NO internet access anymore at my hospital....it sux! used to have it but all of a sudden got rid of it........guess someone was abusing it :(

We have unlimited inernet access at my job.

WE have the intranet that is designed for the facility so we can communicate to memebers of the team easier. But we also have access to Netscape. Sites are blocked except for those approved by the director like we can go to the civil serivice site, there is a medical site we can go to to research information. SO no nonwork related surfing is able to be done.

Currently we have unlimited access to internet at work. Unfortunately there are some that abuse this priviledge. That's when it becomes a problem, when things are not being done and patients are ignored. This impacts on those that are there to do their job, they pick up the slack. This also negatively impacts staff morale. It's to the point where I do feel alot of sites should be blocked.

We have it, I have used it and so has the doctor...:chuckle

We have internet access, but it's limited. We have a coworker who karaoke sings on ksolo.com and has a beautiful Luther Vandross type voice. We listened to him on our down time and after a month or so they blocked him. :icon_lol:

i think as the world changes and technology becomes every more perversive and integrated with the world, the more the internet is necessary, for example i am always logged on to http://news.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn&q= ( google news) during breaks to see what is out there. am sure on 9/11 there were people who had that site on in the twin towers and managed to escape because of the warning on tv or internet.

We have internet and subscribe to a pharmacology source and Lippencott (sp?) and I use it frequency to look up drugs.

It's for hospital use only, but is widely abused. People check their online courses, bills, banking, email whatever they use it for at home. I confess to downtime browsing myself.

On some of the computers people have downloaded games and that's a big no no and is probably going to have ramifications for us all. I'm waiting for the edict "you abuse the computer so we're taking it away, or putting it only in the charge nurses desk" or something like.

The docs also use it to look up x-ray results that are posted to a website.

Many times I've looked up syndromes and conditions on the internet. I don't own a drug book anymore. I can't imagine not having it.

It is beyond me that some nurses think it is okay to shop online, pay bills and so on while at work. Patients have rights and one of them is to have attentive nurses. The employer has hired you to be there for the patient.

I am as you can tell totally against nurses use the computer for personal use while at work and report it when seen. :angryfire

We do have unlimited Internet access at work... monitored though. I've checked my e-mail once or twice, but usually just use it to look up illnesses or medications, when I use it at all. At night shift, there are times you just can't bug your patients any more, and they don't need you... usually there's something else to do, but sometimes not... the couple of times I've got on there to check e-mail, was only for a few minutes.

We have internet access, but it is absolutely a no-no to log on during work hours. The IT team monitors computer use and if you get caught using the net, it's an automatic firing offense.

( However, if you are a manager- it doesn't count-:angryfire it's amazing how much time the managers spend on online shopping/checking sports scores/etc.,) If they actually enforced this rule with the managers, there wouldn't be any managers on the unit.

Ditto... I have to admit to logging on at the end of an eBay auction (I collect antique medical items) such as the final 3 minutes. However, my boss was fully aware and she admitted to doing the same meaning... I didn't hide it from her. (Yeah, just try hiding anything from a 6' red headed, 350# nurse who was involved with absolutely everything! LOL) I have since learned the art of sniping software and it is no longer an issue. I shared this art with my boss and she loves it too! I have to say that my total time logged on to eBay over the course of 6 months was likely 15 minutes total.

It should be noted that we were also permitted full access to the internet during breaks or lunch breaks. Since it was rare we received a lunch break nobody really cared if we handled business on line for verrrry short spurts of time. I sincerely didn't abuse it. Others did, but I didn't.
