Just wondering if anyone here has intenet at work and if so, what are the rules regarding its use? Over here the icu has internet, but all the other floors dont, and so at night the icu nurses are plugged to the internet browsing, while the other nurses are 'working'. just asking for opinions here and what are the legal ramifications.

We have internet access and are expected to use it wisely. We don't abuse it as we don't want to lose it.
It comes in handy at times.

We also have the internet at work. The intention is for nursing to be able to research on it. On occasion we have an employee researching Lands End for Christmas but usually thus occurs on the midnight shift. Once they realize that management is aware it stops quickly. It is nice for a nurse to be able to research a new drug or a disease on the CDC so we would not want the few that try to play on the internet to spoil it for all.

:sniff:
Allnurses is a blocked site --done at corporate level since some abused spending time here.

We have internet access in our icu and hospital wide as well. Obviously numerous employees have abused the system and most sites have been firewalled. I believe we can still access for work related issues. (which brings me to the idea of the original purpose in the beginning:roll

We have computerized charting and on-line scheduling throughout the hospital. However, we also have to sign in on each computer we use so if we are accused of going where we shouldn't be going, we can get fired (and it has happened).

We have internet, (I work in ICU) and it is very handy for patient teaching and nurse education as well. It is to be used wisely, but I have to say that they don't readily enforce that. There is a lot of shopping and emailing done on the clock....

We used to have internet access on two of our computers... the unit clerk's computer, and the education computer in the back room. Those priviledges were revoked because people were abusing it.
However, the computers in the doctor's charting room still have access, though some sites are blocked. I use one of those computers sometimes on my lunch breaks to log into allnurses and look around.

We have internet access at our place and they have firewalls to some sites ie: games, music radio and a lot of Media but I am sure that there are sites that some can still get into. Allnurses is available to me and when I want to take a break that is what I will do sometimes. There is some sites that should be banned but aren't such as ebay and QVC....some people spend way to much time there playing and not working..I watched one of my co-workers keep checking on a computer that he was buying on ebay...couldn't get him to do anything else. :nono:

We do have the internet at work on all the floors. We are expected to use it responsibly. Nothing is blocked. I do very occasionally go to allnurses.com at work. There is very rarely time.
Several months ago they ran a report on what people were looking at. The night shift had logged on hundreds of hours on Ebay and playing Mai Jong. I know you have to do something at night to keep your mind awake so I'm not faulting them. I'd probably be on allnurses for hours. I am just concerned when the patients tell me they didn't see their nurse all night unless they asked for pain medicine. I do think the hospital should restrict
alot of sites. I work for a HCA facility.
