I had a kid come to me with pain from a regular run of the mill ingrown toenail. There was nothing I could do. I don't have anything to set up a foot soak, I technically can't do nail care outside of cleaning nails, not enough nail to do the wet cotton trick. So I just explained how to properly trim toenails and sent him back to class.
Had a kid lying to me that he was feeling sick yesterday, it's amazing how good I am in knowing they're lying now. I told him to go back to class and he just kept going on he was sick and that his class is boring. I'm like, I don't care, go back to class, we only got 2 more days left! Called his mother and she teared him a new one after that phone call.
Today I "prescribed" stretching exercises to two students with soreness without injury. I explained how my dog does these amazing stretches every time he gets up and that he reminds me to stretch too. As I showed them a few stretches, *I* started to feel better!
It might have felt like nothing but I did not get the impression that their teachers would feel comfortable telling them to do that so I feel pretty good about it!
I just had one tell me her side was "numb" after someone hit her with a ball. I really love when kids tell me their body parts are "numb." What am I supposed to do with that?
As an ex-neuro/ortho post-op nurse I still freak out at the word "numb" because it was a major red flag in that line of nursing. On these kiddos I have flashbacks to those days and I always immediately check cap refill, warmth and color. Then I laugh at myself for the over-assessment.
The last kiddo I did nothing for was the one that came to me 15 minutes before dismissal saying he'd been coughing all day. I told him to go home in 15 minutes and tell his parents. Seriously, what do you want from me in the last 15 minutes of the day for a cough? I don't even have cough drops.
