I am starting in less than a week my prerequisites to enter into an associate's of nursing degree program, and I am just wondering, do any of you have a plan if Nursing doesn't work out? Of course I really want to be a nurse, and I think I can do it. But I keep reading stories on here of people who've spent years in school, tons of money, only to find that when they get to clinicals they aren't necessarily suited to Nursing or just don't have the knack for it. So if something like that happens, do you have a fall back plan? Will the courses we take be accepted for something like physical therapy, radiology, or maybe respiratory therapist? Something else in the medical field? I am hoping and praying that I do as well as I want to, but I'm also aware that sometimes wanting isn't enough. What are your thoughts or plans?
Yes, after completing a masters degree in Human Services and having a couple years of professional work experience I would have to say that is my back up plan or safety net if you will. But like most are saying I won't entertain even thinking negatively and will keep my eyes on the prize!!
Im a little worried because of the fact that I dont have a backup plan. Thats why Im gonna work as hard as I can as soon as I get accepted to the RN program at my college. Im pretty sure I'll be accepted for Smmer semester judging by my points, but im still scared.
I didnt even know about my community colleges nursing program until I met with a counselor to talk about the classes I needed. I only took the classes I needed for the program so Im not even close to having my AA.
I just know once I get in, I'll work as hard as I can to finish. First step is just getting accepted.
If I dont, my mom will probably ship me to the Philippines, lol.
kuccellini I know exactly how you feel. I'm in a similar boat to you, though I'm done with prereqs and now have the pleasure of retaking some that are "too old". Color me excited.Plan A is to get a nursing degree. I don't care what type, just one that will allow me to be a nurse. I was picky about wanting a BSN immediately but I'm to the point where I don't care. :) I want my Masters in Nursing down the road anyway and with a BS already, I really only need the Associates degree...
Plan B is to become a PA.
Plan C is to give up and blow glass for a living. :)
I would do Plan C over plan B
Hi! I am just finishing up my prereqs at UW. I am applying to UW's nursing program this fall and getting in is my plan A. I will probably also apply to a handful of other schools which will be my plan B. If I get into a BSN program I will graduate in 2013. My plan C is getting a BS Biology degree with a concentration in physiology, and then persuing an ABSN program after I graduate in 2012 I'm trying to ease my own stress by convincing myself that even if I don't get into a BSN program right away, I would still be able to graduate in 2013 with both a BS biology degree and a ABSN degree
No, if I dont make it in nursing I may have to work at wal-mart the rest of my life.I cant afford to stay in school for any more classes.
I'm doing my prereqs for nursing school and working at wal-mart full time. I can tell you that everyday I go to work is a reminder that I want to get out of retail. The people are rude and managment thinks you can do more work than is humanly possible for less than $10 an hour. I know that you get the same kind of people (a-holes and otherwise) no matter where you work but at least the medical field is more rewarding than retail.
I don't want a backup plan other than the medical field. If you want something bad enough you'll get it no matter what obsticle is put infront of you. Having a backup plan is a good idea considering the economy but don't let yourself get "comfortable" going for your second choice in life.
I have to apologize ahead, I didn't read the whole thread, just the initial post. At my school, with the requirements for entry into the ADN program, I actually also met the requirements of the respiratory and the radiology program. Unfortunately I missed the deadline for respiratory (didn't really want that route anyway) but I did apply for the Rad Tech program and it is looking more promising then the ADN program. It's always good tp apply to more than 1 school, I've applied to 3 RN programs and 2 rad tech programs. With the competition for enrollment being what it is, I'm tired of waiting. GL to you
I mean I do have a plan to go to grad school if I do not get into any program.
However, I know I will get in at least one program for sure. My super safety is the private nursing school 5 minutes from my house. I am guaranteed to get in but messed up part it's for the ASN.
However, if the worst happens I will be applying for NYC Teaching Fellows or going to grad school for my MA in history or for an MSW.

yes ofcourse, a lot of the pre-res for nursing will go for PT, radiology, respiratory therapist, LPN ,ect :) I already have in mind Plan B, C , D, E and F! hahaha!
You will do fine though and remember that as an RN you can work in A LOT of different places. If you don't like the hospitals, then there are clinics, nursing homes, ltc, home health and the list goes on!
Good Luck :)
Well, I'm a Medical Assistant, so if this doesn't work out, then I can always work in a dr's office and do just about anything. I'll still get to take care of patients, get a decent living, and be able to get a job just about anywhere. I've done medical assisting for 5 years now and have worked as a CNA also. I have a pretty decent idea of what's ahead, not to say I know for a fact, but at least I have my RMA license!
Well, by next semester I would be done with my prerequisites Thank goodness. I haven't thought of a plan B till this year. I always thought I could make it and if it didn't work out, I would transfer to a 4 year college. However, this semester I haven't had time to study for the nln pre-exam. I'm a full time student and my anatomy II and intro to college chem has taken most of my time. I started considering the possibility and I was reading other programs in my community college such as getting an AS in Health Science and transfeering to Mercy College where I would immediately complete and get a BS in Health Science along with a MS in phyisican assistant.
I'm still being positive and realistic at the same time.

This would be my 2nd degree. I've done tons of things in my lifetime so I have more than a few "back up plans". I've worked in advertising sales, I've worked as a paralegal. If for some reason I realized I was not cut out to be a nurse, I would still finish it, work for a while and get into the legal nurse consulting business, or I could go back to being a paralegal.
I've also run my own business so thats another option. However, I'm not even thinking about those things. I have one goal in mind and I intend to achieve it.
