Disturbing to anyone else???? NEED HELP.

Yes, I agree with that her behavior does cross a line that should not be crossed. However, if she is your worst problem, then you should consider yourself very lucky. You're going to meet all kinds of people in this world -- and if she is otherwise a good instructor (good teacher, fair grader, etc.), then I wouldn't make a big deal of her ocassional use of profanity. Some fights, while legitimate, may not be worth fighting.

The same thing goes for the beverages. Don't be the one to rat her out. You would only be asking for trouble -- and it's just not worth it.

In other words ... "Yes, you are right and she is wrong ... but I would save my resources for bigger battles to come." My recommendation is to relax and enjoy the show from the sidelines unless her behavior starts to actually hurt somebody.

I have had teachers in the past do things like this.I just didn't really care as long as a learned,which I did.

The other students shouldn't be eating and drinking I agree.But I couldn't imagine lecturing for a while without at least water.That is kind of harsh I think.

Last week in our first 4 hour lecture with our Psych instructor (2nd yr NS) she apologized up front if she offends anyone because she is used to letting the "F" word fly and hopes it won't be a problem.
She also told us a simple way to remember the SE for cholinergic drugs:
Can't See
Can't Pee
Can't Spit
Can't Sh*t.
Am I being too touchy or is this extremely unprofessional coming from an instructor???
In addition to that (if that isn't enough), we were told it was against the rules to eat or drink in this classroom that is being loaned to us (by DON). If any of us are caught violating the rules, we can lose the classroom. The first night of instruction, this same instructor was 1/2 hr into her lecture and made the announcement that she cannot teach for 4 hours without water and proceeded to get her drink and brought it to the podium. Now many students are bringing in coffee, pepsi and food. Do I rat??? I am so uncomfortable. Please help.

I see what you are saying but I think you need to just r_e_l_a_x! :) I try not to get annoyed about stuff like that--takes too much energy.

GIRL--you will hear all sorts of stuff in nursing that is NOT professional. Now, does that mean YOU do it? Well, that is up to you. You can't change someones elses behavior--just your own. As for the food and drink issue, try not to sweat it. Just worry about your own actions and try to ignore the other stuff. She'll have to deal with it IF the crap hits the fan with the DON. If she was endangering someone or something, that would be totally different. You will have to get a thick skin--maybe she is trying to prepare you for the real world! Yeah, it's rude...but what can ya do????

I have been known to let some F bombs fly myself - but COME ON - this is a teacher! Students are expected to bite their tongues and speak to instructors with respect, and the instructors should do the same. If she cannot control herself with her students, how does she control herself with her patients??? If it does not bother you, I'd keep shut. But if it bothers you, even a little (which since you are posting here, its at least been on your mind), or if it is distracting you from getting as much out of the class as you should, then I would talk to the instructor directly. Then sweetly explain that you find it distracting and see what she says. Personally, I find the memory trick cute and funny, but if one of my instructors used "the F word" in class, I don't think I'd hear another word she said after that!

Just a quick thought....since I have had a teacher like this also.... Does she speak to her patients like this????????

Unfortunately, You have to let certain teachers do certain things, I have learned the hard way. Just sit thru the class, do what is required and finish out the semester without a peep and then hope you dont have an instructor like her next semester.

I think there are some people that dont know how to handle the position of 'authority and power' that comes with being a teacher. I had a teacher that spent most of the class telling us stories about her experiences with patients and contradicting herself continuously, then in the last 2 or 3 minutes of class, tell us what our assignment would be. It was like she didnt understand what to do with all the attention she was getting standing in front of a captive audience. She didnt understand that it "wasnt about her".

I really dont see anything wrong with the mnemonic device. In fact, I think it is kind of witty. Letting the f word fly about is different, it is vulgar without any need to be so. I absolutely would not rat about the liquids brought in the classroom. You have plenty to worry about academically without drawing yourself into something that is just going to turn lots of people against you. AND, if you have already been told that bringing those drinks in would cause you to lose the classroom, then telling would cause you to lose the classroom.

At our college, NO food/drink is supposed to be brought into classrooms...

However, you sit through 4.5 hours without water(at least), and at 10:45AM a diet pepsi sounds mighty tempting after 2.5 hours!

The memonic devices are a tool, you do NOT have to use it, but it may help. What patient is going to know you are thinking about said saying? With the F-bomb issue, she just may be used to doing this in lectures with students. Does not mean she addresses clients like this(although, usually, it's tough to change behavior).

Do NOT be the one who rats out the class. Eventually it will be found out and you will have a lot of comfort issues with said instructor and classmates. No one wants to be the one who can't be trusted. Same as in a workplace enviroment. If it compromises patient safety, ok. But if not.....maybe it's not that big a deal. You want to be the "ought to" cop? Then don't be suprised when work's not that friendly.....

Just a thought.

I think you just need to relaxxxxxxx...take a chill, boss. Nursing school, like any other school, has it's share of "quirky" instructors, and if her methods help ONE student to remember something, then her methods are worth the effort.

As for the food/drinks issue, I totally agree with other posters...don't be the one to rat her out. There will be an imaginary target right square on your forehead if you do that.

Besides, it's YOUR responsibility to get an education. As long as she's a good instructor and gets her point across, don't worry. You'll waste valuable time and energy...energy you need to remember facts for the next test.
