Dismissal from nursing school without failing any course

I am supposed to enter my senior year in a BSN program by August, i already completed 3 semesters in the program. I just found out my nursing program sent my a dismissal letter for what they tagged "unprofessional" behavior. These behavior includes calling my teacher less than one hour to a lab class to get permission to be absent due to sick health, waking up late due to a sickness and could not attend a 6:30am clinical which i already made up, not being able to review my nursing exam afterwards because i wad having serious anxiety attack, etc. The point is that look for every opportunity yo write me up because I'm one if their best and the only black.

They already told me at the last disciplinary meeting that i have one chance before being kicked out and i have not used that last chance and they sent me a letter of dismissal when I'm already away for break.

My questions:

1) Can i appeal this successfully?

2) Can another school accept me if i choose to transfer?

3) Is it advisable to make this a court case and will it have any effect on finding a job here afterwards?

Note: I am an international student on an F1 visa for now.

Whoa, where are you going with all that attitude?Like the other poster says ,you need and must take responsibility for your actions, choices ,whatever. If you continue like this you will not succeed, nursing is a job for the toughest with the softest heart, thickest skin.Rethink what you wrote and tell the whole story, some soul searching is required.Did you have some type of study contract ?Seems like more has occurred than you realize.

We aren't lawyers -- we don't know if you can appeal this successfully, but it does seem likely that making this a court case will make it extremely difficult for you to get a job in nursing even if you can make a successful case.

From what you've written, your behavior was unprofessional. If you have legitimate health issues that affected your attendance, take care of those issues before deciding what to do in your future. If the issue is anxiety, counseling is in order. I doubt very much that your race had anything to do with your dismissal. It seems as if the school had legitimate grounds. And we're only hearing YOUR side of the story.

And you made it very, very easy for them to find the opportunities...

Oh, yes... you're a victim... Are you sure it's not also because you're beautiful? That's often the reason, you know...

Evidently, you have...

Not likely...

Maybe... probably not a public school, though. Check out the high-priced private schools... but you're likely to have to repeat a ton of classes... It's all business, you know?

No, it's not advisable... and on what grounds? And with what evidence? And yes, it most certainly could have an effect on finding a job... Most employers are loathe to hire litigious people.

This post should have had a beverage alert! Lemonade is pretty hard on laptops!

Wow! The use of the "angry black women" stereotype to back up your argument is a cheap shot. Not surprising though, especially given how many posters are whining about the "race card".

OP - if you felt discriminated against there are laws that prohibit it. Speak with legal council.

I thought i was the only one!! "The race card" is baloney and strictly used to gaslight. Amazing that its unheard of by so much of this forum for a person to be mistreated due to not being white. Black people only make those things up to be a victim *rolls eyes*

OP- i would appeal. You had another chance b4 being dismissed and you were not allowed it. Forget all the perfect nurses in the comments who WOULD NEVER be sick or late within the span of 2 years. People have appealed for much worse.

And people of color never claim discrimination when in fact it's simply their own poor performance *rolls eyes*

Plenty of white folks do the same thing... "It's because I'm so smart..." or "It's because I'm so beautiful..." or "It's because of my age..." or "It's because they just don't like me..."

No, it's because you're irresponsible... or a jerk... or incompetent... or unreliable... or whatever.

I get what the school is having an issue with. Not showing up and canceling is a no go in nursing. However, I think school is more of a learning moment and should be less punitive. Has the school given you any time to change you behavior? It sounds like they failed to give you a chance to change...

Anxiety is real. Are you being treated medically for it? If not you should seek treatment and try to learn some coping skills. Nursing is a very anxiety producing field. Perhaps you should look into another line of work where your anxiety would not be triggered if it incapacitates you. Although, some anxiety in nursing is good because it keeps you on edge. Some nurses are too lax and it ends up they miss critical information/signs/symptoms etc.

I am sorry you are having these issues. Nursing is an OK field (I have been working as an RN for 5 years), but lacks good retirement. By far, there are much better places to work. I am in the National Guard and get paid better and the work is much easier than nursing. If you feel called to nursing, fight to stay in. If you are just doing it because "why not" then try something else that might be a better fit.

Good luck!

It seems like your lack of responsibility is what's lead to your dismissal. I'm not familiar with international studies and transfer options so I can't help you there. One thing I will say is that as a Black woman, your choosing to make excuses for your irresponsibility while claiming the school is dismissing you due to ethnicity is offensive. You have not offered a single piece of data to support such a claim but you've provided a lot of justifications for why you should be dismissed. Racism exists, it is rampant, but it is not the boogeyman hiding in the shadows to do you in. Your claim takes away from real issues of racism and bigotry that truly do exist.

Use your dismissal as a learning lesson and grow from it. Own your behavior and maybe you'll see some success.

I think the biggest issue here is "International Student on F1 Visa". I don't know that much about students visas... I have spoken with a couple people about them - one who had to plan a trip back home in 5 days because her husband wasn't allowed to take a summer course and they had to return home (Israel) until August when his semester started again. The OP may not be able to legally come back to get her things since she is no longer a student.

Out of all this - the part that bothers me is "the last disciplinary meeting"... I would think there shouldn't be even 1 and maybe I'm wrong - but "the last" kind of implies to me that there may have been a previous one as well. If I were to have to go through a first disciplinary meeting, you could bet that I would be in that parking lot 2 hours early for every class or clinical no matter what - even if I had to sleep there!

We all know nursing school is tough and rules are rules. There are no exceptions.

Yeah, she probably was discriminated against. So many ---- ppl are racist. And of course many other ---- ppl dont want to admit this bc it benefits them. They get the jobs, the spot in nursing school, the vote, the benefit of the doubt, etc. Etc. Etc.And the last person who can tell a POC that they're Not being discriminated against is a non-POC. *rolls eyes*
