Nurses Professionalism

Nurses have you ever been discriminated or treated very poorly in the workplace based on gender, race, religion or sexual orientation?

To explain why people are asking for more details....that is what nurses do...an occupation hazard. We want all the details before we begin answering. Unfortunately we have many who come here to have their homework completed for them. Allnurses is a professional community that supports the nursing profession to help all nurses be the best nurse they can be....we ask ALL students to show work and effort.

I think the OP is investigating nursing as a second degree and has legitimate questions but as nurses we ask for more information so we can give the best opinion/advice to inquiring minds. Nurses are often seen as "passive-aggressive" or overbearing. We are frank and honest. We have a habit of not mincing words.

This thread is about discrimination....let's stick to topic

OP, have *you* experienced discrimination in the workplace? If so, please tell us about it. I'd love to hear your story.

I know this is off topic but...

It's remarkable to me, that we can all read something, and draw a different feeling out of what we read.

I didn't read the first responses as mean, or passive aggressive.

I read the OPs responses to those first posts as defensive.

Then the posts that followed, I just thought were funny. I can see how the OP might be offended, but I wouldn't have been.

Oh well. The limits of the written word on a website are obvious.

My issue was not with the first couple replies from the original OP. It was with how quick everyone is to start getting mean as soon as OP got defensive. It amazes me how people are quick to cast judgement. Like, who cares if it's a homework assignment or not? You can research that topic all you want but first hand experiences can be helpful too. I just couldn't figure out why the topic turned into an ugly fight.

The point is, if it is for homework tell us. The fact that the OP posted multiple threads all if similar vague questions, points to it being homework. And trying to cheat your way through school by getting a message board to do your work for you is despicable.

Now if she had said that she found x results when researching and asked if that seemed to fit what we've experienced in the real world, that would be different.

Plus all the God bless stuff comes across as insulting.

Especially the terms of endearment. Don't call me sweetie, honey, etc... You don't know me from Adam.

Can I call you Spikey??

Not to throw in my two cents- but this site has some of the best blog fights ever and all over the most ridiculous stuff! And you never know by the topic what you're getting into. I just always happen upon this kind of back and forth. Someone said it before- you didn't know when you clicked on this blog that you'd need to get some popcorn!

This type of problem happens when people read the same thing in different tones and then there's all of THIS mess! And it never helps when other people jump all over someone with both feet. Maybe just a light toe jab was necessary.

Anyway OP- I am a black female current nursing student and I don't think I've ever been discriminated against to this point. Not in my field anyway. I accredit that to the atmosphere of the school I attend and the hospital I work at.

I think there's always potential for that type of stuff to happen, unfortunately, in any field.

Who cares if it's a home work assignment? Why is everyone being passive-aggressively ******? If you don't want to answer the question then move on. Nurses are so mean to each other for no good reason. Wow! Sorry OP. :-(

In my opinion spoonfeeding a student the answers to an assignment isn’t kindness as it only helps in the very short term but completely fails to provide any useful tools or skills necessary to gain proficiency in their future profession.

The real question here is.....have you ever tried to post your homework assignments on AN and been found out within zero point two seconds...... um yea.

So telling a nursing student your own personal experience of discrimination is spoon feeding? Yeah it may be uncomfortable to you but you don't even have to reply. It's not like OP was asking for s/s of DKA. Then I can see where you would call that spoon feeding. You know sometimes is good to help each other out. That is different from spoon feeding.

@rntransition727, Thank you so much for your insight. I am very passionate when I am misunderstood. I love to learn from different people and I have asked others such as lawyers, teachers, I.T guys, to truck drivers these same simple questions with no problem. ...until now. This have truly enlighten me. Also, I'm not a student and I wasn't posting to gain insight as a career switcher. I often say God bless you", but this is the first time anyone was offended. Anyways , people often ask me how do I have so much peace.? And that's usually because my heart is too big to entertain certain people and things but on rare occasion being human I am caught off guard. Thankfully after this I still have my peace and Joy that is priceless. I will let Go and Let God from here. I wish all a Bless nursing career and may many doors open for you All. PEACE!
